Cat vaccination | Pet Professional

Throughout their lives, all cats are likely to catch a number of diseases, even more particularly if they live in the house and have access to the outdoors. These conditions can seriously affect their health or even cause their death. Vaccination is by far the best protection.

When will my cat be vaccinated?

From the age of two months, the kittens are no longer protected by their mother?s antibodies. Now this is an age where they are particularly susceptible to disease. After acquiring a kitten, it is particularly important to be vaccinated by a veterinarian. It must receive two injections about a month apart for all diseases against which you want to protect it. In some cases, the first injection has already been done when you adopt your pet. In such cases, do not forget to recall a month later, essential for obtaining good immunity.

Cat vaccination

Against which diseases your cat vaccinated?

There are 5 against which you can protect your cat through a vaccine (for more details on each disease, refer to the complete file about them):

Enzootic: it is very dangerous for our feline companions. This is a viral disease sometimes wrongly called ?cat AIDS?. In fact, if it is caused by a virus of the same family as that of AIDS (a retrovirus), it is more of a leukemia of viral origin, as an immune system deficiency. Unlike AIDS, the cat can contract Enzootic by all natural pathways: blood, sexual contact, but also saliva, tears, urine. Once infected, the animal may be HIV positive and infectious without being sick for months, even years. Despite recent advances in the treatment of these diseases, when symptoms begin to appear, it is often too late to save the cat. Leukemia is characterized by weight loss, anemia, the appearance of lymph nodes, and sometimes tumors. Vaccination remains the best weapon against this disease.

Typhus: It is a highly contagious viral disease. It mainly affects the kittens can catch it at any age. Typhus is transmitted, human, or other domestic animals. The effects are a viral diarrhea accompanied by high fever and dehydration. It is almost always fatal. The virus responsible for typhus is very resistant to disinfectants. Contamination can occur several weeks after the passage of an infected cat. Fortunately, thanks to the vaccination, the disease has become rarer.

Coryza: It is the association of virus and bacteria which reach all the bucco-pharyngeal sphere of the cat: ulcers in the mouth, purulent nasal discharge, Infectious conjunctivitis sometimes associated with impairment of the cornea. If it is not often fatal, however this disease is very debilitating for the animal. It is often chronic, and the cat is regularly relapsing. It has stuffy nose refuses to feed, and often even to drink. All these symptoms associated with fever cause a profound state of weakness that can lead to death if treatments are not underway quickly.

The Chlamydia: results in chronic conjunctivitis, usually in one eye, sometimes both. The flow of the affected eye is permanent, and is accompanied by redness and itching. Once the cat reaches, it is very difficult to treat definitively. Although conjunctivitis appears healed, the animal may remain contagious. This disease is not fatal, and is generally limited to cats that lived in community (farms, shelters ?), or have had a rough time growing up as kittens from the streets. It should discuss the suitability of this vaccine, which is not routinely performed, with your veterinarian.

Rabies: this is the main infectious disease of the cat, which can be transmitted to man by it and which is the subject of specific legislation. The rabies vaccination is required for your cat if you want to take it abroad. The vaccination protocol presents a special feature, since it does not require other diseases as a single injection to be effective. The rabies vaccination is practiced from the age of 3 months (and not 2). Immunization, the vaccine is legally valid only 3 weeks after injection.

(AP) ? Los Angeles Angels ace Jered Weaver has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a lower-back injury that likely will force last season's AL Cy Young runner-up to miss at least two starts.

The Angels made the move Tuesday, recalling touted prospect Garrett Richards from Triple-A Salt Lake.

Weaver threw just 12 pitches Monday night against the Yankees before pulling up awkwardly after a pitch to Robinson Cano. He was diagnosed with lower back spasms and a strained muscle around a disc in his lower spine.

Weaver is 6-1 with a 2.61 ERA this season, throwing a no-hitter against Minnesota on May 2.

He says he's particularly frustrated because the injury prevents him from making starts against the Yankees and the defending AL champion Texas Rangers this week.

Greek experts say they find Med's deepest wrecks

ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? Greece's culture ministry says two Roman-era shipwrecks found in deep waters off the country's western coast disprove the accepted theory that ancient shipmasters stuck to coastal routes rather than risking the open sea.

A ministry statement says the two 2nd century AD wrecks were discovered earlier this month between 1.2 and 1.4 kilometers (0.7-0.9 miles) deep

Tuesday's statement said these are the deepest known ancient wrecks in the Mediterranean.

They were located during an investigation off the islands of Corfu and Paxoi, in waters where a Greek-Italian gas pipeline is to be sunk.

A Greek oceanographic vessel using side-scan radar and robot submarines took footage of scattered pottery, ballast stones and what could be remains of the wooden ships.

The team also raised samples of pottery and marble artifacts.

Theater Review: 'Ghost The Musical' | Theatre | Arts & Entertainment ...

Both haunting and earthbound

By Judd Hollander Created: May 28, 2012 Last Updated: May 28, 2012

Da’vine Joy Randolph, Richard Fleeshman, and Jeremy Davis appear in 'Ghost The Musical.' (Joan Marcus)

Da?vine Joy Randolph, Richard Fleeshman, and Jeremy Davis appear in 'Ghost The Musical.' (Joan Marcus)

NEW YORK?The final scene of Ghost The Musical is wonderfully magical. Unfortunately, much of what comes before sacrifices intimacy for the big bang, as it were.

With a book and lyrics by Bruce Joel Rubin, music and lyrics by Dave Stewart and Glen Ballard, and based on the Paramount Pictures film written by Bruce Joel Rubin, the stage show hews too close to the source material to establish its own identity.

Wall Streeter Sam (Richard Fleeshman) lives happily with his sculptress girlfriend Molly (Caissie Levy), though he is afraid to say ?I love you? to her. Molly has been able to overcome her own commitment issues, never wanting to get married until now. Looking on bemusedly is their best friend Carl (Bryce Pinkham), who works in the same firm as Sam.

\>");

The happy couple?s romance is cut short when Sam is killed in a robbery. Yet Sam finds he still exists as a ghost and is desperate to protect the stunned and grieving Molly.

Aided by storefront psychic Oda Mae Brown (Da?vine Joy Randolph) and a very angry Subway Ghost (Tyler McGee), Sam learns his death may not have been simply due to a random act of violence.

The musical paints a powerful message of the fragility of life. Sadly, the creative team seems to have forgotten that ?Ghost? is, at its heart, a love story, and all too often quiet moments are lost by adding unneeded bits of business.

For example, when Molly sings a haunting song about moving on, there are various people dancing in the background, blunting the emotional thrust of the number.

Elsewhere, the scene where Sam confronts his murderer (Michael Balderrama) is lit very dimly, with a screen between the audience and the actors, and so those watching are unable to see the reactions of either character.

Finally, Sam, after dying, is greeted by a Hospital Ghost (Lance Roberts), a touching moment which morphs into a song and dance number, destroying the horror Sam feels about what?s happened to him.

The show does take the art of special effects and projection to an entirely new level, making Sam?s spiritual ability to walk through walls and to disappear totally believable without distracting from the rest of the action.

The production is also able to perfectly capture the feeling of living in New York City, via excellent video work showing scenes of the skyline, Wall Street, and people running to and from their jobs?the last of these being both physical and projected.

Molly (Caissie Levy) and Sam (Richard Fleeshman) in a scene from “Ghost The Musical,” based on the movie starring Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore. (Joan Marcus)

Molly (Caissie Levy) and Sam (Richard Fleeshman) in a scene from ?Ghost The Musical,? based on the movie starring Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore. (Joan Marcus)

Yet the show suffers from special effect?s overkill at times. In a love scene between Sam and Molly, images of their bodies intertwining are superimposed on them, as if not trusting the actors themselves to covey the emotions needed.

Fleeshman and Levy are excellent in their roles and one can certainly feel the romantic sparks between the characters. Fleeshman portrays Sam as a basically good man, determined to make things right even as he loses everything he holds dear.

Levy, meanwhile gives Molly a nicely earthy quality. The actress is also able to realistically deliver her musical numbers, ranging from songs about loss and yearning to ones of more happier times. The score itself, however, is completely forgettable.

Pinkham does a nice turn as Carl, someone who may know more about what?s happening than he initially lets on. Balderrama projects a menacing attitude as Sam?s killer and McGee has some very good moments as the Subway Ghost.

Randolph is fine as Oda Mae, but she often plays the character a bit too broadly, especially in a scene in Sam?s former office. She does have a great show-stopping number (?I?m Outta Here?), but one not necessary to the plot.

Direction by Matthew Warchus is okay as far as it goes, keeping the show moving nicely without any noticeable lags, but like Rubin?s script, his efforts fail to reach the heart of the material and make it soar.

The video and projection design work by Jon Driscoll is quite good and the illusions by Paul Kieve are wondrous to behold. Hugh Vanstone?s lighting and Bobby Aitken?s sound are both excellent, a good thing as this is one case where it is quite important for every technical aspect to come off entirely as planned.

?Ghost The Musical? has a wonderful love story at its center, but too many missteps distract from its ultimate message.

Also in the cast are Moya Angela, Carly Hughes, Jennifer Noble, Jason Babinsky, Jennifer Sanchez, Daniel J. Watts, Vasthy Mompoint, Alison Luff, Jeremy Davis, Sharona D?Ornellas, Josh Franklin, Albert Guerzon, Afra Hines, Joe Aaron Reid, Constantine Rousouli, and Daniel J. Watts.

Save Money With These Great Home Improvement Tips | Diamond ...

Put new floors in. This is not an inexpensive project, but in the long term it will add real value to the home. Not only does removing old carpeting or linoleum to install new hardwood floors gives you a beautiful space, but this type of flooring has a long life that adds a significant amount to the value of your home.

If you use mud for drywall you can put texture on your walls and hide problems. Texturing is simple. Put the drywall mud on then use tools to give it texture. A stiff brush will work, as will a sponge, a fork and even a plastic bag. Anything that gives an interesting texture.

Do not pick a contractor based on the best price. It may be easiest to pick the one who offers you the lowest quote, you never know if they will add more charges as they work. Many times you get what you pay for when it comes to home improvement contractors. Take some time to find out what the fair market value is for the work you want done and use this information to guide your choice.

Are you using a contractor? Set up a schedule on which to pay him, based on the work done, not on the time he is working. This gives you the chance to get rid of the contractor if they aren?t performing up to your expectations.

You may be able to diagnose a problem with the loss of water pressure easily. Begin by checking with neighbors to find out if they have noticed a similar problem. If not, the problem is in your home. Check each faucet?s water pressure to find out if the problem affects the entire house. It may just be an aerator that needs adjusted but if not, you may want to call in a professional.

To enhance the curb appeal of your home, give your garage door a fresh coat of paint. Garage doors often get exposed to different elements, making them look worn and dingy. Your house looks better overall with a freshly-painted garage door. Instead of going with the standard color, try changing your garage door, to better compliment your home.

Take your time when doing demolition during a home renovation. Do not tear a wall or cabinet down before checking what is in the supporting structure. If electrical elements were damaged, it may be costly to make the necessary repairs.

To save money, refinish dreary cabinets in lieu of replacing them. Paint the bases, replace fixtures and get new doors for a brand new kitchen. You will modernize your entire kitchen without spending a lot of money.

Whenever you?re doing home improvement work in your bathrooms or your kitchen, you must remember to turn off the water feeds before going anywhere near the pipes or fixtures. You may think this is an obvious step, but it is not uncommon for homeowners to forget, causing serious damage and greater expense.

Maintain good records of contracts and agreements with any professionals you hire. Never rely on your contractor to do so. Your file should include estimates and invoices as well as the document outlining your original agreement for the work. This will help both you and your contractor remain focused on the task at hand.

Bright colored flowers is a way to improve your home?s exterior appearance. Choose the ones you need for each season. It?s also worth the effort to keep your shrubbery well-manicured and your lawn nicely mowed and edged. These easy improvements could boost your home?s look.

It is well worthwhile to come up with plans for any major home improvements in order to avoid making an upgrade that is unsafe. The cost is worth it just for the peace of mind it will give you! Also, these records will remain on file for your house, so if you choose to sell, the buyers will know that your upgrades were done correctly.

It is possible to expand storage capacity by using old shoe boxes. You can cover the shoe boxes with fabric or wallpaper samples for an interesting decorating touch. They make terrific storage containers, and they can even give your room a little extra drama.

Have everything in perspective when making home improvements. Think hard about the reason for any given project, and consider how it might make your life better or easier. You must commit yourself to your home improvement projects, and be sure that your money and time are invested wisely.

Two Tibetan Buddhist Monks Protest China, Set Selves On Fire At Jokhang Temple In Lhasa, Tibet

BEIJING ? Two men engulfed themselves in towering flames outside a temple that is a popular tourist site in Lhasa, marking the first time a recent wave of self-immolations to protest Chinese rule has reached the tightly guarded Tibetan capital, a U.S. broadcaster reported Monday.

Radio Free Asia said in a statement that the men were taken away by authorities within minutes of setting themselves on fire Sunday outside the Jokhang Temple.

There have been at least 34 immolations since March of last year to draw attention to China's restrictions on Buddhism and to call for the return from exile of the Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama. Most have taken place in heavily Tibetan areas of China, but only one had occurred in Tibet itself and none in the capital.

Protests have become rare in remote Tibet and Lhasa in particular because of tight police security that has blanketed the area since anti-government riots erupted in Lhasa in 2008.

Radio Free Asia said the men in Sunday's protest were believed to be monks but their identities and personal details were not immediately available.

The broadcaster cited a Tibetan living in exile as saying he had heard from others inside Tibet that huge flames had engulfed the two men and that they were believed to be seriously hurt or dead.

A woman with the Lhasa city police denied any immolation attempts had occurred. Like many Chinese bureaucrats, she refused to give her name.

Fu Jun, an official with the propaganda department of the Tibetan regional Communist Party office, said he was unaware of any immolations.

Radio Free Asia said Lhasa was under heavy police and paramilitary guard and that the situation was very tense.

Chinese authorities have confirmed some of the self-immolations over the past year but not all.

Microsoft Changes Terms Of Service To Avoid Future Class-Action Suits

Class-action lawsuits against companies often costs them a big fortune. Tech companies have been facing such lawsuits for quite some time. And now, it seems that they have found a way to counter it. Microsoft is now starting to change its user agreements and terms of service so that users would be legally bound not to file a class-action lawsuit against it.

According to Microsoft, it is going forth with this change in light of the ruling that was given in AT&T Mobility vs Concepcion case in the Supreme Court. In the case, it was ruled that a company can prevent a plaintiff from filing a class-action lawsuit, though leaving the plaintiff options of either settling the complaint privately or through a small claims court.

This amendment will effectively shield Microsoft from any major claims from users in the coming days. According to the company, it has already updated its Xbox Live service with the new user agreement and will soon be applying the same changes to its other products and services.

According to a blog post written by assistant general counsel at Microsoft, Jim Fielden, ?We think this is the right approach for both Microsoft and our U.S. customers.?Our policy gives Microsoft powerful incentives to resolve any dispute to the customer?s satisfaction before it gets to arbitration, and our arbitration provisions will be among the most generous in the country. For instance, we permit arbitration wherever the customer lives, promptly reimburse filing fees, and, if we offer less to resolve a dispute informally than an arbitrator ultimately awards, we will pay the greater of the award or $1,000 for most products and services?plus double the customer?s reasonable attorney?s fees. Most important, this approach means customer complaints will be resolved promptly, and in those cases where the arbitrator agrees with the customer?s position, the customer will receive generous compensation, and receive it quickly.?

While this does sound like it is being done for the good of the customers, the contrary may be the case since class-action lawsuits have often forced companies to improve themselves.

Technological savvy part of senior's drive to help others

ST. CHARLES ? Brian Ricketts had no trouble falling in love with robots.

After all, as he tells it, robotics have become an essential part of his life.

?There aren?t many people that can say they have a microprocessor in their leg,? Ricketts said, with a sly grin.

For as long as he can remember, Ricketts, a graduating senior at St. Charles North High School, has been fascinated by computers, the technological devices they power and the way they run.

At the age of 7 or 9, he began programming computers.

And those speaking with the young man or his mother, Julie Ricketts, of St. Charles, easily could be overwhelmed by the tales they might share of the tinkering Brian has done with household appliances and devices.

His mother noted, for instance, that his favorite toy when he was 2 years old was a surge suppressor.

Lately, those urges have turned to video games, which Brian creates himself, and gaming systems, which he might take apart and rewrite some code to make it do things it otherwise could not.

He reprogrammed a Microsoft Xbox Kinect system to allow users to ?fly? a virtual aircraft by moving their hands or speaking commands.

?It?s how I like to spend my free time,? Ricketts said.

So when the opportunity arose for Ricketts to join the competitive robotics team, PWNAGE Team 2949, sponsored by St. Charles manufacturer Genesis Automation, he did not think on the decision too long.

?I used to be in the Boy Scouts, and I tried piano lessons,? said Ricketts. ?But then I found robotics. And I thought, ?This is where I belong.??

Ricketts joined the team in his senior year, becoming one of the later members of a group that is interested and skilled in engineering, computer programming and other disciplines related to robotics.

The team takes its robots to regional competitions against those designed by other high school teams in task-based contests.

Teams were judged this year on their robots? abilities to move about a playing court, pick up foam basketballs and throw them through small basketball hoops.

Ricketts helped program the robot and said he loved every minute of the work and the competition.

Marsha Brown, technology and engineering instructor at St. Charles North, said Ricketts? infatuation with robotics should not be a surprise to anyone.

?There are things I?m learning from him,? Brown said. ?With the programming, and the things he?s able to do, it?s just nuts sometimes.?

In a class project earlier this year, students were asked to create a machine that could accurately launch ping-pong balls.

Ricketts? team created an accurate launcher. But then they went further, making their machine mobile.

?It did shock me when it moved around the room, because no one had told me,? Brown said.

Ricketts still laughs about that project.

?You should have seen the look on her face,? he said, chuckling.

Brown said Ricketts? penchant for exceeding expectations, along with his knowledge and ability, is what sets him apart.

?He is just so knowledgable about these things,? Brown said. ?So passionate and so driven.?

Ricketts, however, demonstrated his drive in more than just robotics projects or at-home tinkering.

At age 6, he was diagnosed with cancer in his left leg. Despite treatment, the cancer spread to his knee. Ultimately, doctors amputated his leg at the thigh.

Not until about two years ago, after a fight that lasted almost a decade, did doctors declare the cancer in remission.

In the years since the amputation, Ricketts learned to walk with a prosthesis, including a recent model that includes technology to help prevent him from falling.

?So I guess you can say I have experience with a robot on my knee,? he said with a grin.

Ricketts enrolled at DePaul University and will attend classes in the fall. He will major in computer science.

He said he has not decided yet how he wants to use his technological abilities, although he did mention a fascination with virtual reality and autonomous automobiles. And he wasn?t averse to defense applications, he said.

?That would be kind of cool, maybe working with drones,? Ricketts said.

No matter what he does, Ricketts said he wants his work to focus on one thing:

?I want to make technologies to make people?s lives easier. It?s so important to me.?

Estate Plan Trusts | Insurance Quotes

Efficient est planning is crucial if you need to maintain your current wealth for your children. Avoid making these typical estate arranging mistakes in order to not pay unnecessary added est taxes (demise taxes) on the Internal revenue service assuring challenging government bodies hence reducing your children?s gift of money. You will be pleased to realize that these high priced blunders are easily prevented with the right planning.

Malfunction to acknowledge the need for the state of hawaii estate duty legislation.

Numerous states have their very own est taxes (loss of life taxes) and the mind-boggling tastes these have got ?decoupled? his or her house tax from your National estate duty, so your property could be be subject to point out house tax even when zero Government est levy arrives.

Since National est taxes difference presently is actually $5.Twelve zillion (with regard to Next year merely) as well as the state thresholds regarding declares that will demand their unique property taxes all are underneath this kind of sum (normally, at $1 million), without correct preparing, this kind of difference you could end up an upsetting surprise to your beneficiaries upon your own loss of life. You?ll want to review your current financial predicament to ascertain the possible experience express property levy and also learn to lessen this.

Misconception the new Federal government house taxes legislations that went directly into impact in 2011.

A lot of sighed in comfort any time President Obama authorized the Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization along with Career Design Act associated with The year 2010 on Dec 18, This year. They reckoned that will death fees for many though the extremely well-to-do were properly eradicated.

The Act offers up a great demise taxes exemption associated with $5 zillion with regard to Next year and $5.12 trillion pertaining to Next year. Your Behave also provides for ?portability? in between husbands and wives from the dying tax different with regard to properties involving decedents death next year as well as 2012. Regrettably, this specific new program will be momentary and can sundown in Dec 31st, 2012. The actual death tax regime in which existed just before Beginning of 2001, having a 55% highest dying levy price along with a $1 million exemption, will likely be reinstated next.

Despite the fact that Government taxes regulation has been temporarily revised, numerous claims keep having an property taxes dispense of just $1,1000,000, without having ?portability? of rarely used estate levy exemption involving spouses. You simply can?t afford to ignore taxes arranging if you wish to minimize as well as steer clear of point out house taxes.

With the existing Government house tax regulation established to run out after Next year, as well as the difference amount timetabled in order to go back for you to $1 trillion as of The month of january A single, 2013, just about all preparing right now ought to echo the possibility that things might return to pre-2001 regulation.

Departing everything for a partner.

Many couples individual the majority of their residence collectively and possess reciprocal Wills where the wife foliage almost everything on the husband along with the hubby foliage everything towards the spouse. This is normally a good unproductive duty design with regard to lovers in whose combined locations may well go over the normal $1million condition death duty exemption given it waste products the disposable difference in the very first partner for you to die, leaving behind exactly the $1 thousand dispense from the heir to avoid demise duty. Despite the fact that because of the limitless marital discount there won?t be any death duty thanks should you keep every little thing for the surviving partner if the initial wife or husband dead, the particular living through spouse?s est will probably be subject to demise levy if your house properties of the actual surviving partner (such as the property passed down from your first partner) exceeds your $1 trillion different.

The loss of a great property tax dispense may be avoided in case terms inside will or existing believe in agreements develop a ?credit shelter? or even ?bypass? rely on in the loss of life with the 1st wife or husband. Inside a normal credit rating housing rely on, the particular surviving wife or husband will be eligible to receive every one of the earnings in the trust for life-time, and contains the authority to withdraw principal regarding wellbeing, education, assist and also maintenance consistent with his or her used means of living. Once the surviving husband or wife dead, the $1 zillion within the credit history refuge have confidence in (which includes any thanks too) travels to your children clear of death duty.

The amount that resources a standard credit score protection have confidence in differs based on your own fiscal and family members instances. With regard to loss of life taxes reasons, the financing shelter have confidence in ought to be funded with as many as the state of hawaii exemption sum (typically, $1 thousand). The finance refuge believe in could be backed with the additional sum as much as the Federal demise levy exemption ($5.A dozen thousand for that 12 months 2012), with respect to the client?s Federal government dying taxes direct exposure.

Lowering death taxation is really a difficult make any difference and also this post will not try and deal with every duty issue inside est preparing. At least, your current estate plan ought to cope with every one of the troubles mentioned previously. Whether it won?t, you borrowed from it to oneself and your loved ones to review your house arranging.

(AP) ? Morocco's glittering Mawazine international music festival wraps up this weekend with performances by Mariah Carey and Lenny Kravitz, after nine days of showcasing the North African kingdom's cool factor ? even as dissident Moroccan musicians are imprisoned for their anti-establishment lyrics.

The 11-year-old "Rhythms of the World" festival in the capital Rabat has always highlighted Morocco's contradictions as the country spends millions to lure top world artists to perform at generally free concerts, while much the country remains mired in poverty.

In past years the festival has been attacked by Islamists for inviting gay performer Elton John in 2010 and by activists for the cost of attracting Shakira and other high profile acts in 2011, but this year the theme of protest is freedom of expression.

Just a week before the festival began, Human Rights Watch slammed Morocco for sentencing a rapper to a year in prison for lyrics deemed insulting to police ? a common theme in rap music elsewhere in the world.

"Morocco hosts one famous international music festival after another each spring, but meanwhile it imprisons one of its own singers solely because of lyrics and images that displease the authorities," Sarah Leah Whitson, Mideast director of the group said in a statement. "Morocco should be known as a haven for world music, not for locking up singers with a political message."

Moroccan rapper Mouad Belghouat, known as El-Haqed, or "The Enraged" was convicted on May 11 of "showing contempt" to public servants with his song "Dogs of the State" about police corruption. He is known for his political activism and vitriolic songs attacking social injustice, the monarchy and corruption.

A week later, dissident poet Youssef Belkhdim was convicted of attacking police ? a charge he denies ? at a sit-in he organized in support of Belghouat and sentenced to two years in prison.

The two men belonged to Morocco's pro-democracy February 20 movement that last year brought tens of thousands into the streets protesting corruption and calling for political reform.

The extravagant sums spent on the Mawazine have been a mainstay of the movement's slogans. Festival organizers maintain that the Mawazine's estimated $7 million price tag is worth it because it improves Morocco's image abroad and gives people at home access to music from around the world. The festival is funded largely by corporate sponsors with strong ties to the state.

"It's a celebration. It's a celebration of the city, a celebration of Morocco and it reflects a bit Morocco's good life to the world," said program director Mahmoud Lemseffer. "It is a vehicle to present the image of our country, of its hospitality and tolerance."

Tens of thousands attend each of the festival's eight venues which present Arabic music, Moroccan music, music from sub-Saharan Africa as well as international acts, which this year included Evanescence, the Scorpions, Gloria Gaynor, Nigel Kennedy and Jimmy Cliff.

Most of the acts have free sections open to the public and on Tuesday, families strolling along Rabat's Bouregreg river stopped to listen to Beninian songstress Angelique Kidjo belt out classics from South African diva Mariam Makebe and talk about the struggle against apartheid.

But for critics, there is irony in punishing artists at home while hosting international ones known for their support of freedom of expression. Lenny Kravitz, for instance, has striven in song after song to confront America's tortured attitude about race.

"I think that people should really say what they feel ? everybody has the right to speak their mind, you see how things change in places where people were once condemned," said Kravitz at a press conference Thursday when asked about politics in music. "When I was in Brazil a couple of years ago, I was talking with (musician and activist) Caetano Veloso who dealt with that same thing, who did jail time ? and now he has made a difference."

Salif Traore of the Ivorian band Magic System said that for African artists, speaking truth to power and freedom of expression is what their music is all about.

"We in Africa, we say that artists, musicians and singers are the eyes, ears, and mouths of the people," he told The Associated Press, when asked about his views on the El-Haqed case.

Rachid el-Belghiti, who heads a national anti-Mawazine campaign, also contests the government's assertion that it's supporting culture in Morocco with this festival, countering that it's really just about making the country look good abroad.

He said the Mawazine, which is run by a close confidant of King Mohammed VI, eats up the lion's share of corporate sponsorship so that little is left for other festivals around the country.

As millions are being spent to lure in big name acts, local theaters and dance schools around the country are closing down because of a lack of funding.

"A country which puts its artists in prison simply for expressing themselves with their voice or their instruments cannot pretend to support culture," he said. "That's impossible."

The landfill nudge at the University of Pennsylvania

Decision makers do not make choices in a vacuum. They make them in an environment where many features, noticed and unnoticed, can influence their decisions. The person who creates that environment is, in our terminology, a choice architect. The goal of Nudge is to show how choice architecture can be used to help nudge people to make better choices (as judged by themselves) without forcing certain outcomes upon anyone, a philosophy we call libertarian paternalism. The tools highlighted are: defaults, expecting error, understanding mappings, giving feedback, structuring complex choices, and creating incentives.

140 jobs to be created in seafood industry

140 jobs to be created in seafood industry

Saturday, May 26, 2012

More than 140 jobs are to be created in the seafood processing industry following significant investment by 21 Irish seafood companies.

Simon Coveney, the marine minister, yesterday announced ?15.5m worth of investment by the seafood processing companies, based in Wexford, Dublin, Cork, Donegal, Galway, Louth, and Kerry.

The investment, supported by grants of ?3.2m under the EU co-funded Seafood Processing Business Investment Scheme, is set to boost sales of seafood by nearly ?44m by 2015.

Mr Coveney said: "This is a very sizeable investment by any standards and particularly so when combined with investment under this scheme over the past two years. It demonstrates the confidence in the seafood sector as a high growth area of our economy and of our food industry."

Meanwhile, up to 40 jobs are to be created in Tipperary by a medical diagnostics company.

Technopath, based in Ballina, announced the jobs on the back of a ?3m investment to scale their manufacturing capability and drive export activity.

This investment, supported by Enterprise Ireland, is being made in the quality control division, which manufactures products for a number of multinational in vitro diagnostic companies.

Technopath products monitor the quality of hospital laboratory blood tests (cholesterol, cancer markers, cardiac markers) and prevent the reporting of incorrect results.

Richard Bruton, the jobs minister said: "A central part of the Government?s plan for jobs and growth is creating a powerful engine of indigenous enterprise.

"Over recent years we have established major strengths in key sectors such as ICT and life sciences ? we must now build on this to get more indigenous companies growing to scale, exporting more, and creating more jobs."

Octa Vacuum Dock + WhaleTail

Holding a tablet, especially a larger-screen model, can be an uncomfortable and sometimes precarious affair?you have to hold it with one hand, freeing the other for touch input. Octa wants to give you something more substantial to grab with its Vacuum Dock + WhaleTail ($49.95 direct), a whimsically designed, multi-function tablet grip and stand. The result is a surprisingly comfortable, yet somewhat bulky add-on that works with iPads and many other tablets.

inline

Two pieces, the Vacuum Dock is a small plastic dome that's 3.95 inches in diameter and 5.9 inches tall. At first glance, it seems too large and cumbersome, but the size makes sense, as the dome fits comfortably into the palm of your hand, providing a far more natural grip than holding the tablet at its edge with the tips of your fingers. That said, it could stand to be a bit lighter, at almost 6 ounces. The dock attaches via suction cup, with a rubber pump button affixed to one side. A small rubber cap sits on top of the dock, which you remove to add the WhaleTail. The WhaleTail is a quirky black rubber attachment that resembles?you guessed it?a whale's tail. It's moldable, down to the fins, which makes it a simple solution for propping your tablet up at a variety of angles. It's also strong enough to hold that position without flexing too much under normal pressure.

Setup is straightforward: Press the Vacuum Dock onto the back of any smooth backed tablet, give it five or six pumps, remove the cap, and twist the WhaleTail into place. The suction cup requires a smooth back, so any textured device, like the Asus Transformer Prime, won't work. Once installed, the fit felt secure, though I'd give it a few pumps whenever you can just to be safe. It's also easy to remove by simply pulling at two tabs on the suction cup. While it's definitely not the most streamlined option and is a bit pricey at $50, its endearing design, comfortable grip, and useful stand function make it an interesting companion for your iPad or other tablet. At the very least, you'll have a conversation starter.

Sony formally quits Sharp LCD joint venture, takes back every yen it invested

After Sony cut off its supply of capital to the ill-fated Sakai production plant that it jointly owns with Sharp, it became clear that the final goodbye may be little more than a formality. And here it is, in the form of a cold, resolute press release stating that Sony is selling its seven percent stake back to Sharp and taking back the 10 billion yen ($126 million) it originally invested. The only reason given is the "rapidly changing market for LCD panels and LCD televisions," which is a polite reference to the fact that profits from big TVs are well below what these companies predicted back in the heady days of 2008 and early 2009, when the impact of the global economic crisis loomed without yet being fully apparent. Fortunately for Sony, which is in the delicate stages of reform, the solid pre-nuptial agreement it had in place with Sharp should protect the company from having to revise its financial forecasts for the coming year -- not that those were particularly great in the first place.

Baku, Doha face scrutiny in 2020 bid choice

(AP) ? The field of candidates for the 2020 Summer Olympics could be reduced from five to three, with Doha and Baku in danger of missing the cut.

Tokyo, Istanbul and Madrid look certain to make the list when the International Olympic Committee executive board announces the group of finalists on Wednesday evening in Quebec City.

Whether the IOC keeps all five cities or pares the list to four or three remains the issue, a tricky choice at a time of global economic and political uncertainty.

"Risk is part of the assessment ? political risk, economic risk," IOC board member Denis Oswald said Tuesday.

Madrid is bidding for a third consecutive time, Tokyo a second time in a row and Istanbul a fifth time overall.

Doha, capital of the Gulf state of Qatar, and Baku, capital of the former Soviet republic of Azerbaijan, are back after failing to make the shortlist for the 2016 Games and face the most scrutiny again.

The cities selected Wednesday will go forward to the final phase, a 17-month race that will end with a secret vote by the full IOC in Buenos Aires in September 2013.

The 15-member executive board, headed by IOC President Jacques Rogge, will choose the finalists after examining a technical evaluation report compiled by a panel of Olympic experts.

IOC Vice President Thomas Bach called it "the most difficult decision we have ever had to take with regard to a shortlist."

The dynamics of the race changed dramatically when Rome, considered a potential 2020 favorite, pulled out of the bidding in February after the Italian government declined to provide financial guarantees at a time of economic austerity.

If there is a cut Wednesday, Baku is expected to be eliminated first. If the IOC decides to keep four cities, Doha would be safe. If it's three finalists, Doha would likely be dropped.

Baku is seen as lacking in experience in hosting international sports events and officials believe it's too soon for the city to be considered a viable contender.

Qatar is already hosting the 2022 World Cup, but faces questions over the heat, the timing and other issues for the Olympics. The IOC agreed to let Doha bid based on Qatar's proposal to hold the games from Oct. 2-18 to avoid the brutal summer heat, but officials remain concerned about the weather, conditions for athletes and potential conflicts with television and other sports events going on during that time of year.

Doha, saying it's bidding for the entire Middle East, insists it has the backing of international sports federations for its October proposal.

"We have done all that was requested from the international federations and the IOC," Qatar Olympic Committee secretary general Saoud Bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani said Tuesday. "We have communicated with them. We are confident that we fulfill all the requirements. We just have to wait for their decision."

Madrid is bidding against the backdrop of Spain's financial crisis, something the IOC said it will take into account.

Madrid bid leader Alejandro Blanco said the city would go the distance until the vote in Buenos Aires, brushing off suggestions that it could drop out as "rumors" spread by rivals. He insisted the Spanish government fully backs the project and said the games would be a catalyst for economic recovery.

"The economy is not a problem only for Madrid," Blanco said. "The crisis is global. History shows it's impossible to always be in a peak economic situation. There are always ups and downs. We are talking about 2020. Things can only go up."

Tokyo is bidding in the aftermath of last year's earthquake and tsunami disaster.

"We need something to lift up the country," said Tsunekazu Takeda, president of the Japanese Olympic Committee. "The games will help re-energize the people."

Istanbul bid official Hasan Arat insisted the Olympics is Turkey's main priority. The country is also bidding for soccer's 2020 European Championship, but the IOC has said Turkey can't do both.

"For Turkey, hosting the games has always been the ultimate prize," Arat said. "Every level of government is right behind us. ... Turkey has never been more serious about hosting the games, and we have never been more ready to host the games."
