Neck and Back Pain - Health and Fitness Tips

Travelling can be very exciting, but it can also be very stressful, especially if it is a long flight. Back or neck pain is nearly unavoidable as a result of sitting in the same (probably cramped) position for hours. Here are some tips to improve your journey.

Reserve a seat on the aisle or at the emergency exit. Either will give you a bit more space and you can get up as often as you feel. Try to book a flight at a time when there will be fewer people on board, as you will have more space in which to stretch out. Do exercises to strengthen your back and core muscles from about a month before the flight. Attend Pilates classes or lift free weights to achieve this.

Stay relaxed

Have everything packed and ready about two days before departure. Try to be as relaxed and unhurried as possible on the day of the flight. Be on time and relax with a book or magazine while waiting to board. Make sure you are well hydrated before the flight. If you know you will suffer from back pain, take muscle relaxants or pain killers an hour before the flight.

Avoid lifting anything heavy on the day of the flight. Use baggage trolleys and make sure you have packed only what you need in your bags. You should opt for two smaller bags than one big, heavy one. Try to keep your carry-on bag as light as possible; a heavy bag will strain your muscles and be uncomfortable to wrestle into and out of the overhead compartment. If possible, perform some discreet yoga or stretching exercises just before you board.

Use back support

Once you are seated, adjust your seat to be as comfortable as possible. Try to tilt it back as far as you can; your shoulders should not be pushed forward. Use a pillow or lumber roll to support your lower back and to align your spine correctly. Most flight attendants will be only too happy to supply you with pillows.

Use one behind your neck as well; a U-shaped neck pillow is the best to use. Though all passengers wish they could have comfortable divan beds to sleep on during a flight, they have to make do with what is available.

If you are short, place something under your feet to ensure that your knees form a 90? angle. This will relax your leg muscles and take some of the strain off your back muscles. Use magazines or even your bag to raise your legs.

Once the flight is under way, try to get up and walk or stretch a bit at least once every hour. Touch your toes a few times and stretch your arms above your head. You could even do some stretching exercises in your chair if space allows it.

Make sure to drink enough water during the flight. You could have some light snacks; some people feel much better if they don?t eat much during the flight, instead waiting until after the flight to have a proper meal. This can also help with jet lag.

Some seasoned travellers do not sleep the night before the flight; they take some muscle relaxants and sleep for most of the flight. Use ear plugs and an eye mask to exclude any noise or light. Listening to music using ear plugs also helps to relax you.

Upon arrival, bend your knees when lifting your luggage off the carousel to avoid hurting your back. Do a few stretching exercises as well.

Baptist leaders urge Miss. church to reject racism

CRYSTAL SPRINGS, Miss. (AP) ? Townspeople prayed for racial reconciliation Monday, but the black man whose wedding was rejected by a predominantly white Southern Baptist church in this small Mississippi town said he wasn't ready to let racism be swept under the rug.

"Prayer works, but only if you want it to work, only if you want it to work in your heart" said Charles Wilson, the groom. "There are some that won't change and I accept that. But I won't stop talking about it. We're still hurt."

As 150 residents sweltered in a park beside a railroad track, their song of praise was drowned out by a southbound Canadian National freight train. The scene was today's South writ small, a place where a lot of things have changed but where the pain of the old hurts can still flare anew.

Wilson and his bride Te'Andrea were to be married at the First Baptist Church of Crystal Springs on July 21. But after their rehearsal two nights before, the church's pastor sought to move the service, saying some congregants didn't want two black people to get married in the orange-brick sanctuary.

The Rev. Stan Weatherford married the Wilsons as scheduled in another sanctuary, but Charles Wilson began speaking out, saying he felt betrayed by the congregation and Weatherford. The pastor is personal friends with Te'Andrea's family.

Weatherford says the relocation was a request meant to avoid conflict. The Wilsons say it was a demand, with Weatherford saying the congregation would fire him if he married the pair in his church.

Weatherford refused to confirm that and sidestepped questions about whether he had made a mistake.

"They say hindsight's 20/20," Weatherford said. "I'm going to continue to pray to the Lord for wisdom in my life."

He said the church will confront its problems internally.

The Wilsons said Greg Duke, a Sunday school teacher, was the only member of the church to reach out to them. Duke said he found out about the relocated wedding the day after it happened, although it took a few days for him to piece together the facts. He said most of the church's hundreds of members didn't know what happened until the story hit the news.

Monday, as townspeople set off on a prayer march after the rally, he spoke to the Wilsons, inviting them to return and give the church another chance.

"I think a few people dictated what happened," Duke said after speaking to Wilson and his crying wife. "I'd just like to say we were all hurt by this. Not like they were, but we were hurt."

Duke said he hoped the people who objected to the wedding would step forward and make amends. Alderman Ray Brown, one of three black men on the five-member town board, said he agreed that the church should issue an official apology.

"I think the First Baptist members, the progressive ones, aren't for this," said Brown, who doesn't attend the church. "I think there may be some ones that are stuck in the past."

Monday's rally was organized by Mayor Sally Garland, who is white, as reporters began streaming to this part-trim, part-scruffy town just south of Jackson's suburban fringe. It featured a racially balanced group of pastors. The majority of attendees were white, though the town is majority-black.

Southern Baptist leaders called Monday for the church to reject racism. Baptist churches are autonomous, so they want the congregation to chart its own course.

Jim Futral, executive director of the Mississippi Baptist Convention board, said the organization was praying for the church and is ready to help. William Perkins, a spokesman for the group, said the church has not contacted state officials.

"Mississippi Baptists both reject racial discrimination and at the same time respect the autonomy of our local churches to deal with difficulties and disagreements under the lordship of Jesus," Futral said in a statement.

After being slow to reach out across racial lines, Southern Baptists have made increasing efforts in that direction in the past two decades. Nationwide, about 19 percent of 45,000 Southern Baptist churches are majority-minority, including 3,500 that are majority black.

Earlier this year, the convention elected its first black president, the Rev. Fred Luter Jr. of Franklin Avenue Baptist Church in New Orleans. At the same meeting, delegates voted to give churches the option of calling themselves Great Commission Baptist churches, for those who wish to break free of the baggage of the Southern Baptist name and reach more followers.

"We are all saddened when any sin, including the sin of racism, rears its head," said Southern Baptist Convention spokesman Sing Oldham. "Part of our gospel is that we are being redeemed. We are flawed, failed creatures and redemption is a process."

Oldham said "a sizeable number" of Baptist pastors are fired or forced to resign each year in conflicts with church members. Most seminaries teach that pastors should be fired only for moral failure or theological error, but Baptist officials say many ministers are fired for personal conflicts or other reasons.

"Unfortunately, most of the members of the church don't read those books," Oldham said.

During Tokyo's Wonder Festival over the weekend, Super Smash Bros. designer Masahiro Sakurai tweeted the image above showing off a prototype Pit figure from Japanese premium toymaker, Figma. Figma's take on the winged hero comes from his 3DS outing, Kid Icarus: Uprising, and joins their Samus from Metroid: Other M and Link from The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. Figma will also be releasing a Dark Pit figure in the future.

Figma's stuff tends to be for the high-end set, and in addition to Nintendo's iconic characters, they've also made figures based on Persona for Atlus and anime series such as Black Rock Shooter.

In Israel, Romney declares Jerusalem to be capital

JERUSALEM (AP) ? On Israeli soil, U.S. presidential candidate Mitt Romney on Sunday declared Jerusalem to be the capital of the Jewish state and said the United States has "a solemn duty and a moral imperative" to block Iran from achieving nuclear weapons capability.

"Make no mistake, the ayatollahs in Iran are testing our moral defenses. They want to know who will object and who will look the other way," he said. "We will not look away nor will our country ever look away from our passion and commitment to Israel."

The presidential election hovered over the speech, with the Old City forming a made-for-television backdrop behind Romney, while some of his campaign donors listened in the audience.

In his remarks, Romney steered clear of overt criticism of President Barack Obama, even though he has taken on the present administration in the past for not doing enough to prevent Iran from potentially developing nuclear weapons.

The former Massachusetts governor also stepped back from a comment a senior aide made a short while before the speech.

"We recognize Israel's right to defend itself," he told the audience. Earlier, the aide, Dan Senor, previewed the speech for reporters, saying that "if Israel has to take action on its own, in order to stop Iran from developing the capability, the governor would respect that decision."

Israel is the second of three stops on an international trip for Romney in the weeks before he claims the Republican nomination at the national convention in Tampa, Fla.

He flew to the Middle East from Britain, where he caused a stir by questioning whether officials there were fully prepared for the Olympic Games. A stop in Poland will complete his trip.

Romney's declaration that Jerusalem is Israel's capital was in keeping with claims made by Israeli governments, even though the United States, like other nations, maintains its embassies in Tel Aviv. He did not say if he would order it moved if he wins the White House.

Even so, his remarks drew a standing ovation from his audience, which included Sheldon Adelson, the American businessman who has said he will donate millions to help elect Romney to the White House.

In his speech, Romney said Syrian President Bashar Assad "desperately clings to power" in Damascus in the face of an attempted overthrow, but he did not call for his removal.

He noted that Egypt is now headed by an "Islamist president, chosen in a Democratic election. ... The international community must use its considerable influence to insure that the new government honors the peace agreement with Israel that was signed by the government of Anwar Sadat" more than three decades ago, he said.

A goal of Romney's overseas trip is to demonstrate his confidence on the world stage, but his stop in Israel also was designed to cut into Obama's support among Jewish voters and donors. A Gallup survey of Jewish voters showed Obama with a 68-25 edge over Romney, according to the poll released Friday.

Romney and other Republicans have said Obama is insufficiently supportive of Israel, noting statements the president has made about settlements and his handling of evident Iranian attempt to develop nuclear weapons.

Tehran is closer to developing nuclear weapons capability than before, Romney said. "Preventing that outcome must be our highest national security priority."

In an unspoken rebuttal to Obama and other critics, Romney said "It is sometimes said that those who are the most committed to stopping the Iranian regime from security nuclear weapons are reckless and provocative and inviting war.

"The opposite is true. We are the true peacemakers," he said.

In a March speech before a pro-Israel lobby in Washington, Obama warned of "loose talk of war" that serves only to drive up oil prices. "Now is not the time to bluster," he said then. "Now is the time to let our increased pressure sink in and sustain the broad international coalition we have built."

And by that standard, Antique Taco, a new restaurant in Wicker Park, is merely good." He has high praise for the ingredients: "The tortillas at Antique Taco are warm, redolent with corn perfume, and satisfyingly chewy with a touch of flour. They are stuffed with tender, glistening, grill-marked ribeye larded with hunks of gooey cheese and gorgeous juicy bits of tomato... others are brimming with funky mushrooms, toothsome pickled cauliflower florets and Barbie Dream House-pink onions and wilted garlicky kale. But without a lifting pinch of salt, the chili in the chicken comes off as dusty, and the ribeye is flat. The mushroom?s natural funk fades and the kale?s greenness smacks too much of eating raw from the garden." [Sun-Times]

Mike Sula says that G.E.B.'s three-word descriptions "reinforce[] the claim of simplicity, and it's a conceit that attempts to set high expectations by diminishing all expectations." It all adds up to a majority of solidly prepared dishes, and it's hard to fault even some of the less exciting ones, such a trout fillet with dry green sorrel spaetzle and mushrooms that needed some kind of sauce to help it go down, or a grass-fed skirt steak that was lean and beefy but not distinctive enough to stand up a simple bearnaise sauce. David Tamarkin is happy that Cru Cafe & Wine Bar is back to hang out at, but he's not wild about the food: "I wouldn?t return to Cru for dinner. For a snack, maybe. A bowl of beautiful marinated olives is set down as soon as you?re seated. Follow it up with an order of the jamon toasts, then the mejillones en escabeche: The mussels are purportedly pickled, though they have none of the piquancy you?d expect from the description. Instead, they?re plump and mild-flavored, set on top of a rustic potato puree in one of those tins you usually see filled with imported tuna. Patatas bravas have the crunch of triple-fried french fries and are drizzled with ketchup and mayo: How could that be bad?" In the end, "The flavors aren?t new, and they?re not especially bold. Lawmakers press for tough Iran sanctions bill

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Republicans and Democrats are pressuring congressional negotiators to produce legislation imposing the severest penalties on Iran, targeting its energy sector and financial institutions as the United States seeks to weaken Tehran economically and derail its pursuit of nuclear weapons.

With just one week before Congress' August break, proponents of tough sanctions see this as their last, best chance for far-reaching, crippling penalties as recent high-level talks between world powers and Iran have failed to curb its uranium enrichment. Iran insists that its program is solely for peaceful purposes.

"Now is the time to ratchet up the pressure," Rep. Ted Deutch, D-Fla., said in an interview this week.

Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Fla., chairwoman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and Sen. Tim Johnson, D-S.D., chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, have been negotiating behind closed doors for several weeks to reach consensus on sanctions legislation that the House passed in December and the Senate approved in May.

About a half dozen Republicans and Democrats who favor fierce penalties are determined to see the toughest measure yet and have been insisting to negotiators that a watered-down bill is unacceptable.

"We owe it to the American people to exhaust every possible non-military option to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapons capability," Sen. Mark Kirk, R-Ill., said in a statement.

Rep. Robert Dold, R-Ill., and Rep. Brad Sherman, D-Calif., sent a letter this week to the negotiators calling for a final bill that includes a provision declaring Iran's energy sector "a zone of proliferation concern." The blacklisting would bar all transactions with the state-run National Iranian Oil Company.

"This would have the effect of making virtually any transaction with ? and provision of services for ? the firms in Iran's energy sector sanctionable," Dold and Sherman wrote.

The lawmakers also said any legislation should include sanctions on insurance companies that knowingly provide coverage to an entity that has already been penalized.

They also are pressing for sanctions on the directors and shareholders of organizations like SWIFT, the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunications, unless they stop providing services to the Central Bank of Iran.

"If diplomacy is to succeed in ending Iran's nuclear weapons program, we must enact tough legislation now," the two wrote. "Sanctions are having a real impact on Iran's economy, but not yet enough to change the regime's strategic calculus."

The bill the House passed last year would restrict foreign subsidiaries of U.S. companies from doing business with Iran. Bartering is included among the activities that could be sanctioned, and Americans would be prohibited from conducting commercial or financial transactions with the Revolutionary Guard.

The Senate-passed bill would target Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps, require companies that trade on the U.S. stock exchange to disclose any Iran-related business to the Securities and Exchange Commission and would expand penalties for energy and uranium mining joint ventures with Tehran.

The bill also would deny visas and freeze assets on individuals and companies that supply Iran with technology that could be used to crack down on its citizens, such as tear gas, rubber bullets and surveillance equipment.

Iran sanctions is one of the few issues in Congress that has strong bipartisan support as lawmakers look to thwart Iran's nuclear objectives and show Israel the steps they are willing to take on behalf of the Mideast ally. Last year, the Senate voted 100-0 for legislation by Sens. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., and Mark Kirk, R-Ill., that targeted financial institutions that do business with Iran's Central Bank.

"Iranians continue to look for work-arounds around financial sanctions," said Mark Dubowitz, a sanctions expert and executive director of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies.

Lawmakers, including House Republican and Democratic leaders, are hopeful that they can reach consensus on the measure and pass a bill next week.

Responsibilities Summary
? Consults with the Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) and other members of management team on all matters related to compensation, organization, and job design and performance management matters. This includes coordinating salary plans, salary management, incentive and recognition/award programs, organization and workforce planning. Additionally, will provide leadership in developing and maintaining related University policies/procedures, including the design of creative solutions to issues in these areas.

? Monitors compensation practices to ensure compliance with Board of Region (BOR), University policies, Federal and State regulations and guidelines, and best practices. Notify line managers where practices are not compliant and may expose the institution to litigation, remediation and penalties, etc. Notify CHRO of all findings, remedial actions and status of external actions.

? Ensure appropriate job classification for staff positions. Develop, refine and manage job evaluation methods, criteria, standards and tools to facilitate consistency in classification decisions. Oversee and administer the staff salary plans and wage agreements, in coordination with the Payroll Office. Oversee participation in and utilization of compensation surveys to collect and analyze competitive salary information to determine the organization's competitive position.

? Coordinate with University payroll to ensure appropriate compensation and benefit adjustments are applied accurately and in a timely manner.

Benefits:
? Responsible for ensuring all benefit materials and processes are consistent and in compliance with Clayton State and University System of Georgia(USG) policy, federal, and state regulations. Notify CHRO and USG Shared Services Benefits section of known and suspected discrepancies as they become apparent.

? Monitors and coordinates the processing of benefits claims to ensure compliance with policy, contractual provisions, and relevant laws and regulations; provides individual benefits counseling to faculty and staff employees, as appropriate.

? Provides technical support to lower level benefits staff regarding the processing of benefits documentation to ensure compliance with policy, procedure, and regulatory requirements; provides input into design, implementation, and/or modification of documentation, as appropriate.

? Develop, maintain, and manage communication and work flows with interfacing departments such as payroll and accounts payable regarding benefits enrollment and premium collection functions.

? Manage tuition assistance program for all employees.

? Work with benefit representatives in ongoing reconciliation of premium discrepancies and to ensure benefit premium adjustments are handled in a timely manner.

? Provide employees and their dependents with accurate, current, and timely information regarding benefit options through individual counseling, group meetings, and dissemination of printed and electronic materials.

? In concert with benefits representatives and within HIPAA guidelines, coordinate as necessary with benefit consultant, insurance carriers and providers to troubleshoot and resolve employee claim issues in a timely manner.

? Manage coordination of benefits payments and related reconciliations with Financial Services staff; oversee resolution of discrepancies, corrections, arrears contributions, etc.

? Propose, plan and present benefit events such as benefit fairs and wellness fairs for all faculty and staff, including the development of content materials. Coordinate activities with broader campus events and health initiatives. May engage area health providers as sponsors and information resource services.

? Administers employee education benefits and ensures compliance with Clayton State and USG policy, federal, and state regulations.

General Administration:
? Serve as a subject matter expert, campus resource and/or active participate in workgroups and committees, particularly for systems related to compensation/classification, human resources data warehouse, and benefits on campus and system wide technology initiatives.

? May participate in the development and implementation of operating budgets, systems implementation and enhancements, and the integration of department procedures; participates in overall organizational decision making as a member of the management team.

France, Algeria inch closer, fifty years on

PARIS/ALGIERS (Reuters) - Fifty years after Algeria won independence, France's new president, Francois Hollande, finally appears ready to express regret over one of the bloodiest episodes in its colonial history.

The trauma of the 1954-1962 Algerian war, in which hundreds of thousands were killed or uprooted, left deep scars in both societies, stalling a potential economic and political partnership that could help revive the Mediterranean basin.

France's Socialist president has an affinity with Algeria, where he spent eight months working at the French embassy in 1970 and has regularly returned. With the 50th anniversary of Algerian independence on July 5, Hollande's election in May has rekindled hopes for an elusive reconciliation.

"Now that he has taken power, we are expecting action," said Algerian Minister for War Veterans Mohamed Cherif Abbes.

Before winning the presidency, 57-year-old Hollande suggested it was time to turn the page on France's 132-year Algerian colonial history, although he stopped short of promising the formal apology many in Algeria want to hear.

"Today, between an apology that was never made, and forgetting, which is to be condemned, there is scope for taking a frank and responsible view of our colonial past," Hollande wrote in a column for Algerian newspaper Al-Watan in March.

The war of independence cost the lives of 1.5 million Algerians, the Algerian government says, and it has pushed for Paris to admit its part in the massacre of 45,000 Algerians who took to the streets to demand independence as Europe celebrated victory over Nazi Germany in 1945.

French government officials declined to speak directly on the matter, highlighting the sensitivity of ties. But diplomats are working to crystallize Hollande's position ahead of an expected visit to Algeria this year that would be the first by a French president since Nicolas Sarkozy in 2007.

He has already promised to break with Sarkozy's immigration and security policies, seen by many as stigmatizing France's 5 million Muslims, who are mostly of Algerian origin.

"Now is the time. We must take initiatives and can't let this moment pass," said Jean-Pierre Chevenement, a former defence minister who heads the Franco-Algerian Association. "The government is ready, as is the president."

SHARED HISTORY

In the run-up to the anniversary, both sides agreed not to organize official events. Even an exhibition in Paris, the first in France showing the use of torture by its soldiers, caused consternation among diplomats worried about reopening old wounds.

"We don't share the same memories, but we can share our history. If we managed it with the Germans, then it's a piece of cake with the Algerians," said Pascal Blanchard, an expert on colonial history at the research centre CNRS in Marseille.

While there is a desire in Paris to turn the page, Hollande can only go so far before facing serious questions at home.

Just as the Algerian community feels stigmatized, many so-called "pieds noirs" ("black feet") - North African-born Europeans repatriated after independence - and Muslim "harkis" who fought in the French army against Algerian insurgents, oppose a formal apology.

Some say it is to them that the French government should apologize and provide compensation.

In one letter sent to this 2 million-strong community during the campaign, Hollande promised neither "amnesia nor repentance". He had also previously said that it was useful for France to offer an official apology to the Algerian people.

"Politicians ... write any old thing to keep us happy," said 82-year-old Gerard Perrin, a fifth-generation 'pied noir' who received two letters from Hollande earlier this year.

"Nobody has done anything for us. With President Abdelaziz Bouteflika in power, I don't think any compromise is possible."

RECOGNISING CRIMES

In Algeria, the government rarely speaks officially on the issue, letting independence-era heroes act as its mouthpiece. Many of these veterans demand compensation from France, a law criminalizing colonialism and a formal apology from Paris - suggesting Hollande's expression of regret might not be enough.

The case is complex because, unlike elsewhere in its empire, Paris treated Algeria as an administrative unit of France itself and attempted to negate the territory's own history and culture, leaving a legacy of bitterness.

Former President Jacques Chirac, after a landmark visit in 2003, had his administration craft a Franco-Algerian friendship treaty in the same vein as one with Germany after World War Two. In his memoirs, he said his efforts failed because Algeria had insisted on a full apology.

"We have no hatred towards the French people, but we have the right to ask France to recognize the crimes of colonial France and then apologize," said Tayeb Al Houari, secretary-general of the National Organisation of Children of the Martyrs.

"There is an opportunity for the new French government to think about the right way to close the file of the colonial era and deal with Algeria as an independent state."

The Algerian government has never explicitly formulated a demand for an apology and there are differences of opinion within Algeria.

In 2010, for example a bill proposed by 125 lawmakers to criminalize French colonialism never made it through parliament.

"Does the Algerian government really want a formal apology? From what I have understood, Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia did not support it and that's why this bill failed," said Guy Perville, a historian on French-Algerian relations. "If they abandon this, then it opens the door to a compromise."

The National Liberation Front that has ruled Algeria for the past 50 years won a parliamentary election in May, going against the tide of the "Arab Spring" which has transformed the political landscape in many neighboring countries, although there is still wrangling about who will be the next prime minister.

FRENCH INTERESTS

Hollande has much to gain from improving ties with Algiers.

France is struggling to integrate its Muslim minority. Many second- and third-generation Muslims of North African origin feel alienated in their country of birth.

Bariza Khiari, the Algerian-born Socialist vice-president of France's upper house of parliament, says Hollande will try to tackle that by providing more visas to Algerians, facilitating socio-economic and cultural exchanges and easing naturalization.

"We have emerged from a long, difficult political period for immigrant and Muslim populations in France," she said. "These are small things that will make a big difference every day."

At a time when France is stifled by a lack of growth and the euro zone debt crisis, better ties could bring stronger trade links, not just with Algeria but in the wider Mediterranean.

Flush with oil and gas resources, Algeria is the largest Francophone country outside France itself, yet annual trade exchanges with the former Colonial power hover at a mere 10 billion euros ($12.7 billion).

"The future is positive but the path will be tortuous," Algeria's ex-prime minister Sid Ahmed Ghozali told a forum in Paris. "We should ... look at ties not from an intellectual and moral perspective, but through the interests of the people."
