Power Players: Same-sex marriage could help reduce the deficit

BOTTOM LINE

This week the Supreme Court heard arguments in two landmark cases regarding same-sex marriage: Hollingsworth v. Perry, which deals with California's Proposition 8, and the United States v. Windsor, which deals with the Defense of Marriage Act. The court likely won't hand down a ruling in these cases for several months, but many of you had questions about the legal and economic implications of both cases and of course, about the potential outcomes.

Donna Lynn Lewis wrote in on Facebook: My friend argues that it would somehow hurt the economy as far as benefits or social security, this doesn't make sense to me. Maybe you could explain what the financial effect would be for our society?

Ebersole Hughes Co. asked: Wondering if SCOTUS refuses to hear the prop 8 case or "tables" it- is same-sex marriage legal again in California?

And Kitty Cole tweeted: What's your gut feeling on how the SCOTUS will rule?

Thanks for your great questions, and please keep them coming on Twitter and on Facebook. We'll talk a lot more about the hearings and the shifting tide on same-sex marriage in America on "This Week" on Sunday. Be sure to tune in, and don't forget to watch "Good Morning America" tomorrow morning as well.

Ky. lawmakers override religious freedom veto

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) -- Kentucky lawmakers have voted to override the governor's veto of a bill intended to better protect legal claims of religious freedom.

The law will give stronger legal standing to people in court who claim the government burdened their ability to practice their religion. The legislation protects "sincerely held religious beliefs" from infringement unless there is "a compelling governmental interest." The courts will still consider and rule on each matter.

Democratic Gov. Steve Beshear vetoed the bill Friday over concerns that someone's claim of religious freedom could undermine civil rights protections for gays and lesbians and lead to costly lawsuits for taxpayers.

But bill sponsors said it would only provide a higher level of legal protection that already exists on the federal level and in at least 16 states. The debate pitted civil liberties groups like the ACLU against religious organizations such as the Catholic Conference of Kentucky. Lawmakers voted Tuesday to override.

Correction: FDA-Multiple Sclerosis Drug story

WASHINGTON (AP) ? In a story March 27 about a new multiple sclerosis drug, The Associated Press reported erroneously that Novartis' drug Gilenya was launched in March 2011. The drug was launched in October 2010.

A corrected version of the story is below:

FDA approves new multiple sclerosis capsules

FDA approves pill-based Biogen Idec drug for multiple sclerosis symptoms

By MATTHEW PERRONE

AP Health Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Food and Drug Administration said Wednesday it approved a new drug from Biogen Idec to control multiple sclerosis in adults with hard-to-treat forms of the disease.

The twice-a-day capsules, called Tecfidera, offer a new option for multiple sclerosis, a debilitating disease in which the body attacks its own nervous system. Cambridge, Mass.-based Biogen Idec already sells two other drugs for the disease, but both require injections.

There is no cure for multiple sclerosis and most patients experience relapses of symptoms, including loss of balance, weakness in arms and legs, and blurred vision. Over time patients usually become weaker and less coordinated. More than 2 million people worldwide have the disease, with about 400,000 of them in the U.S., according to Biogen.

The FDA said it approved Tecfidera based on two studies showing patients taking the drug had fewer relapses than patients taking a dummy pill.

The approval gives Biogen a new product in an increasingly crowded field of multiple sclerosis drugs.

The biotech drugmaker already sells the once-a-week multiple sclerosis injection Avonex. It also markets the once-a-month injection Tysabri through a partnership with Elan Corp. PLC of Ireland. However, Tysabri's severe side effects have curtailed its use.

Tecfidera is designed to be taken orally, which could make it a preferred option for patients and doctors.

A Biogen executive said Wednesday that its three drugs would be used to treat different groups of patients.

"Multiple sclerosis is a reasonably complex disease and we think there are a lot of needs out there," said Tony Kingsely, a vice president at Biogen. "By having three drugs out there I think we can address a lot of those needs."

Kinglsey said the company will announce the pricing of the drug when it begins shipping in the next week.

Novartis launched the first pill-based multiple sclerosis drug, Gilenya, in October 2010. Sanofi won FDA approval for a second pill, its drug Aubagio, last September.

The top-selling drug for the disease worldwide is Copaxone, which is made by Teva Pharmaceutical Industries. That injection had sales of nearly $4 billion last year, according to Teva's latest financial report.

Avonex and Tysabri had annual sales of $2.7 billion and $1.5 billion in 2011, the most recent year for which Biogen has reported annual sales.

Biogen Idec Inc. shares rose $5.59, or 3.2 percent, to close Wednesday at $182.68.

'Five Easy Pieces' actress Karen Black is crowdfunding her cancer treatment

By Tim Kenneally

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Actress Karen Black, whose credits include "Five Easy Pieces," "Easy Rider" and "Airport 1975," is reaching out over the internet to seek money for medical treatment, after battling cancer on and off for more than two years.

Black has launched a crowd-funding campaign on the website GoFundMe.com, in hopes of undergoing a two-month treatment as part of a clinical treatment in Europe.

Black's husband, Stephen Eckelberry, explains on the campaign's web page that Black, 73, was first diagnosed with ampullary cancer in November 2010, After an operation to remove a third of her pancreas and extensive chemotherapy and radiation therapy, Black was declared clear of the disease in July 2011, but in June 2012 the cancer came back, spreading to her lungs and lower back.

According to Eckleberry, Black currently weighs just 96 pounds - down from 156 before she was diagnosed with cancer.

Eckleberry says Black is currently living on "a modest pension," and that the couple has used up most of their savings on treatment for Black.

"We have nothing left," Eckleberry wrote on the campaign page. "And the European treatment is not covered by insurance."

As of this writing the campaign, which was launched March 14, has raised $9,241 from 150 donors, out of a $17,000 goal.

Facebook Messenger iOS app enables free calling feature for UK users

Facebook Messenger iOS app adds free calling feature for UK users

While Americans and Canadians have enjoyed making app-based voice calls to their Facebook contacts since January, their overseas buddies have missed out -- until now. The social network's iOS Messenger app has just doled out the calling feature to the UK and potentially other parts of Europe too, although we haven't yet been able to confirm exactly how far and wide the update reaches. It's worth noting that the feature isn't enabled on the Android iteration yet, either. The new calling service isn't powered by Skype this time, although it works in a similarly uncomplicated way, with the ability to leave voice messages with any busy users. According to Pocket-lint, this is an experimental version, warning that you might experience a few bugs and glitches as you play around with it, but hey, you're getting free calls to (most of) your friends, barring any data charges. We've tested the new feature and it's working for several of our UK editors over both WiFi and 3G, but if you haven't already picked up the messaging app yet, you can grab it at the source below.

'Amazing': Obama turns tourist in ancient city of Petra

Larry Downing / Reuters

U.S. President Barack Obama ended his Middle East trip with a visit to the ancient city of Petra, Jordan, Saturday.

By Steve Holland, Reuters

PETRA, Jordan -- President Barack Obama marveled at the sights of Jordan's ancient city of Petra on Saturday as he wrapped up a four-day Middle East tour by setting aside weighty diplomatic matters and playing tourist for a day.

The visit followed a trip to Israel and the Palestinian Territories that was capped by Obama's brokering of a rapprochement between Israel and Turkey, but which offered little more than symbolic gestures toward Middle East peacemaking.

Before heading to Petra, Obama used his stop in Jordan to ratchet up criticism of Syrian President Bashar Assad, but he stopped short of promising military aid to Syrian rebels to help end a two-year-old civil war that has claimed 70,000 lives.

President Obama receives applause from a crowd in Jerusalem Thursday by challenging groups that reject Israel.

U.S. officials privately voiced satisfaction with the results of Obama's first foreign trip of his second term, but the president's aides had set expectations so low that it was not hard to proclaim it a mission accomplished.

Shifting into sightseeing mode on Saturday, Obama flew by helicopter to Petra and took a walking tour of the restored ruins of a city more than 2,000 years old which is half-carved into sandstone cliffs.

Ordinary tourists had been cleared out for the president's visit, and guards with assault weapons dogged his every step.

"This is pretty spectacular," the president, wearing sunglasses, khaki trousers and a dark jacket, said as he craned his neck to look up at the Treasury, a towering rose-red fa?ade cut into a mountain. "It's amazing."

The U.S. president arrived in Jordan on Friday after an unexpected diplomatic triumph in Israel, where he announced a breakthrough in relations between Israel and Turkey after a telephone conversation between the countries' prime ministers.

President Barack Obama on Thursday urged the Israeli people to put themselves in the shoes of Palestinians and recognize their "right to self-determination, their right to justice." NBC's Chuck Todd reports.

Israeli premier Benjamin Netanyahu apologized on behalf of his country for the killing of nine Turkish citizens in a 2010 naval raid on a Gaza-bound flotilla, and the two feuding U.S. allies agreed to normalize ties.

The 30-minute call was made in a runway trailer at Tel Aviv airport, where Obama and Netanyahu huddled before the president boarded Air Force One for a flight to Jordan.

The rapprochement could help Washington marshal regional efforts to contain spillover from the Syrian civil war and ease Israel's diplomatic isolation in the Middle East as it faces challenges posed by Iran's nuclear program.

Larry Downing / Reuters

Obama, left, looks at the Treasury while he receives a tour of the ancient historic and archaeological site of Petra on Saturday.

During his visit, Obama appeared to have made some headway in easing Israelis' suspicions of him, calming their concerns about his commitment to confronting Iran and soothing his relationship with the hawkish Netanyahu.

Obama attempted to show Palestinians he had not forgotten their aspirations for statehood but he left many disappointed that he had backtracked from his previous demands for a halt to Israeli settlement building in the occupied West Bank.

The president offered no new peace proposals but he promised his administration would stay engaged while putting the onus on the two sides to set aside mutual distrust and restart long-dormant negotiations - a step the president failed to bring about in his first term.

Muhammad Hamed / Reuters

Members of the U.S. Secret Service Counter Assault Team survey a path after Obama walked through it during his tour of the ancient historic and archaeological site of Petra on Saturday.

After visiting both Israel and the West Bank, President Obama met with King Abdullah of Jordan, a country facing some very turbulent times of its own, post Arab Spring. But there may be no stronger Arab ally to the U.S. and Israel than Jordan. NBC's Chuck Todd reports.

As Obama's critics were complaining that his Middle East trip was heavy on symbolism and lacking in substance, the last-minute move toward Israeli-Turkish reconciliation gave his aides a chance to tout a tangible achievement.

On the last leg of his trip, Obama promised further humanitarian aid in talks with Jordan's King Abdullah, a close ally, as the economically strapped country grapples with a refugee crisis caused by Syria's civil war.

Obama also used the opportunity to underscore U.S. wariness about arming rebels fighting to overthrow Assad, despite pressure from Republican critics at home and from some European allies to do more.

He warned that a post-Assad Syria could become an "enclave" for Islamist extremism and insisted it was vital to help organize the Syrian opposition to avoid that, but he stopped short of announcing any new concrete steps.

Cyprus turns to Brussels for help on bailouot

BRUSSELS (AP) ? After failing for a week to find a solution at home to a crisis that could force it into bankruptcy, Cypriot politicians were turning to the European Union on Sunday in a last-ditch effort to help the island nation forge a viable plan to secure an international bailout.

Politicians are under pressure to come up with a solution quickly, with the European Central Bank threatening to stop providing emergency funding to Cyprus' banks after Monday if there is no agreement on a way to raise 5.8 billion euros ($7.5 billion) needed to get a 10 billion euro rescue loan package from the other European countries that use the single currency and the International Monetary Fund.

If Cyprus fails to secure a bailout, some of its ailing banks could collapse within days and rapidly drag down the government and possibly force it out of the euro, a huge threat to the stability of the currency used by more than 300 million people in 17 EU nations.

Despite the danger, Europe's biggest economy maintained a hard line. German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said that "if possible we want to avoid seeing Cyprus sliding into insolvency."

But, he added in an interview with the German newspaper Welt am Sonntag published Sunday that Cyprus cannot expect compromise over the threat of bankruptcy and possibility it could leave the eurozone.

"I'm also known for not giving in to blackmail, by nobody and nothing," he said.

The original plan, agreed to in marathon negotiations earlier last week, called for a one-time levy on all bank depositors in Cypriot banks. But the proposal ignited fierce anger among Cypriots and failed to garner a single vote in the Cypriot Parliament.

The idea of some sort of deposit grab has returned to the fore after Cyprus' attempt to gain Russian financial aid failed this week, with deposits above 100,000 euros at the country's troubled largest lender, Bank of Cyprus, possibly facing a levy of up to 25 percent.

Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades and his finance minister traveled to Brussels for meetings with European Union leaders.

European Council President Herman Van Rompuy was chairing a meeting, but a spokesman insisted his role was not to force a deal but to encourage discussion.

To avoid bankruptcy or the collapse of its banking system, Cyprus needs significantly more than the 10 billion euros the international creditors are willing to lend it. They fear that more loans would balloon the country's debt level to an unsustainable level. For that reason, the country must somehow raise the additional money.

Cyprus has "to fulfill a difficult mission to save the Cypriot economy and avert a disorderly default threatening the economy if there is no final deal for the loan agreement," government spokesman Christos Sylianides said in a written statement Sunday.

Officials fear that a Cypriot bankruptcy, which would likely force the country to become the first eurozone member to leave the currency bloc, would roil markets and result in uncertainty that could engulf other weaker eurozone nations, leader to capital flight and higher government borrowing costs.

Anastasiades was also set to meet IMF Chief Christine Lagarde and ECB President Mario Draghi.

If the Cypriots agree to a plan on Sunday, the IMF, European Central Bank and European Commission will then determine whether it meets the requirement that Cyprus' debt, including any new bailout loan, be sustainable over the long run.

Any new proposal would then have to be approved Sunday evening by the Eurogroup, the gathering of finance ministers from the 17 EU countries that use the euro currency.

Their decision might come only as a broad political agreement, with technical details to be hammered out in the coming days. But without an agreement in principle, the ECB is likely to pull the plug on the country's banking system.

Cyprus already took significant steps toward cementing a new plan Friday night, when lawmakers voted to restructure ailing banks, restrict financial transactions in emergencies and set up a "solidarity fund" that should act as the vehicle for raising funds from investments and contributions.

The bank restructuring will include the country's second largest lender, Laiki, which suffered heavy losses after being exposed to toxic Greek debt. The restructuring and the sale of Greek branches of Cypriot banks are expected to significantly lower the 5.8 billion euros that the country needs to raise on its own to secure the rescue loan package.

Cypriot banks have been shut this past week while the plan was being worked out, and are not due to reopen until Tuesday. Cash has been available through ATMs, but many run out quickly.

'I needed to tell him something'

Nothing will bring Robbie and Alissa Parker's 6-year-old daughter back, but learning more about the shooter who took Emilie?s life at Sandy Hook Elementary might help ease their pain.

Emilie Parker (AP/Family)

That mission led the grieving parents to a recent face-to-face meeting with the gunman?s father.

"I felt strongly that I needed to tell him something, and I needed to get that out of my system," Alissa Parker told CBS News. "I felt very motivated to do it, and then I felt really good about it and prayed about it. And it was something that I needed to do."

Peter Lanza?s estranged son, Adam, shot and killed 20 first-graders and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn., on Dec. 14. The 20-year-old gunman committed suicide as police were closing in. Adam also killed his mother, Nancy Lanza, at their home before going to the school. His parents had divorced in 2009 after a long separation.

Reported motives for the rampage have focused on Adam?s mental health, his obsession with violent video games and a fascination with mass killers.

The Parkers, who didn?t reveal what Peter Lanza shared with them during their emotional meeting, said there are still a lot of unknowns, but that they don?t hold him responsible.

?Were there missteps in the raising of his son? Possibly,? Alissa Parker told CBS News in the exclusive interview.

Some have pointed fingers at Nancy Lanza for reportedly not seeking more help in dealing with Adam?s social and psychological struggles and allowing him to be near guns.

?Looking from the outside in, it?s hard to not think that there were things that she could have seen,? Alissa Parker said. ?Do I think it was her fault? I?m sure that there were things that she?s going to have to be accountable for, but again, it?s not my burden to carry.?

The Parkers said they weren?t mad at Peter Lanza. Instead, they believe he holds the keys to preventing another similar tragedy.

Adam Lanza (AP)

?I wanted to tell him that there was a lot of hope and opportunity to gain from this,? Allisa Parker said. ?Because there was information and things to be learned from what happened, and without his cooperation, it would go nowhere.?

The day after his daugther?s death, Robbie Parker showed compassion for the shooter?s family, telling reporters, ?I can't imagine how hard this experience must be for you and I want you to know that our love and our support goes out to you as well."

A spokesman for Peter Lanza told Yahoo News that Robbie?s ?emotionally brave gesture? help set the tone for the parents to meet.

?There was a deep level of appreciation, that given the Parker family?s trauma, that they would still see fit to reach out to Peter,? said Errol Cockfield, the spokesman.

Lucy Meadows, Transgender Primary School Teacher, Found Dead

The British primary school teacher who made headlines in 2012 after announcing she was transgender in a letter delivered to parents has died.

The Guardian reports that Lucy Meadows was found dead March 19 at her home in Accrington, Lancashire. Police are not treating the death as suspicious.

In a statement on Accrington's St. Mary Magdalen's School website, head teacher Karen Hardman writes, "It is with great sadness that I have to inform you of the death of Miss Lucy Meadows. Our staff will be working closely with bereavement teams and are here to offer the children and yourselves any support in any way we can."

Meadows, who had been teaching at the school for three years, announced she was transgender in a letter shortly before the holiday break.

As the Daily Mail reported, the letter read in part: ?Mr. Upton has recently made a significant change in his life and will be transitioning to live as a woman. After the Christmas break, she will return to work as Miss Meadows.?

A statement cited by The Bolton News quoted Meadows as saying at the time, "This has been a long and difficult journey for me, and it was certainly not an easy decision to make." After thanking colleagues for their support, she added, "I'd now ask for my privacy to be respected so that I can continue with my job, which I'm committed to and which I enjoy very much."

Duane Forrester?from Bing ? Overlap between Search and Social

Duane has 12 years in the industry, one of the the first SEOs to be hired by a search engine.

?following best practices then you are onto a good thing?

  • 1 in 4 queries deliver successful result
  • 42% of sessions require further refinement
  • 44% of session lasting day or more

Important for businesses to understand what a ?session? is.

The move from query to session

  • query is a single action, whilst a session is a collection of related actions over time.

What is in the consumer?s mind when they are actually using a query.

Important to understand the consumer better

Query ? Dog

  • Session ? Dog Beds, Dog accessories, dog toys etc
  • understanding the intent is critical
  • are they planning to make a purchase, moving towards the sales funnel ?

presenting the right form of content to engage the consumer more.

understanding why the consumer if engaging with you allows to deliver a greater ROI

  • 50% of all time spent searching in on sessions > 30 minutes
  • almost 50% of queries are returning to previous tasks

presenting the user with what they are actually looking for

?best new york hotels?

  • understanding user intent ? what is the best for each individual user.
  • Web, Online Services and vertically integrated areas
  • again presenting the user with the most relevant app, social platform or whatever best suits the users intent.

Duane loves the Nokia City Lense?and it pulls in suggestions for what is near that person?s location.

?When i type in the name of a famous singer who is also a friend, is my friend not the more important and relevant result ??

  • policing the system ? example of child having smartphone playing a game, clicking an advert for a gambling site and having access as it is linked to your credit card ? hard to police

Reinventing across 3 dimensions

Information architecture ? creation of new information via social graph and geospatial index

Interaction Model ? not just mouse and keyboard ? now include voice, touch, gesture and vision

entry points ? not just browser, but also devices, services and social networks ? people no longer just rely on a search box

Real-time firehose

  • ?dealing with information from a number of different services and trying to enhance the users experience
  • tablets are changing the way in which people consume data.

Schema.org

marking up data to provide the search engine with more information

links, social annotations all help to ensure the search engines produce the best results for the users.

Duane says ?Mark up your content?

Deliver knowledge by computationally understanding users intent

user -> Query -> Intent Detection -> Task Derivation

  • Linda
  • Home Gym
  • Intent Detection -> who, where, others, semantic & research
  • Task derivation -> purchase, install, sell, set fire to & impress friends

This allows for refined results

everytime we get it wrong allows Bing to refine and improve results in the future.

Google and Bing suggest the move away from m.domains for websites

people are expecting an enriched mobile experience

?the ability of these devices to feed in real time signals help us handle intent better?

Gone are the days of focussing on basics

Working out why people with a number of followers on Twitter are in demand, this allows for Understanding topical authority

Taking care of customer is ensuring they can engage with you socially, not just delivering basic customer service.

Shari Thurow?from?- Site Architecture the Right Way

?

Anne Kennedy introduces Shari Thurow with a story from 1998 ? Shari was presenting and described how engines see 2 things ? content and crap.

covering 3 things:

  • SEO, Architecture and the User Experience

SEO

optimizing a website for search engines

optimizing a website for people who use search engines

?in the long-run, technology centered design is generally counterproductive to project and business goals?

SEOs are concerned with :

  • labelling website content so that is is easy to find
  • organizing website content so that it is easy to find
  • ensuring search engines have access to desired content

SEO is not about algorithms

The Big Picture

keywords and labels/architecture and design/ link development & social/searcher goals

=

aboutness/infrastructure & scent/ validation & credibility/ searcher goals

people dont type ?add to cart? into a search engine, but they expect to see it on the page

on-page and off-page criteria balanced allow for long term successes

Site Architecture

a blending of humans and technology

information architects help make website content easier to find

if your credibility goes down, people are less likely to interact with your site

a site will rank better over time if the architecture is right

findability ? query, browsing and asking

querying

- people scan web pages for trigger words to validate their search

people expect works to appear in a subsequent page

as information scent gets stronger, users/searchers get more confident

browsing

different types of navigation

  • global
  • formal/local
  • supplemental- page interlinking
  • headings

all these things need to work together

Technical architecture

refers to hardware and software used for serving web content

information architecture has a big bearing on SEO ? eg. sitelinks show a navigational query

  • benefit of IA ? +30% increase in CTR on 2-line sitelinks
  • affects rankings and conversions
  • searchers are happy with both the site and the search engines provide the most accurate result

expectancy test ? what do you think you are going to see if you click a link (never do in a group)

usability is not testing the human it is testing the interface.

once you have lost a user, you have almost always lost him for good?

Information architecture is good when people can complete theirs tasks

  • IA decisions have a clear impact on SEO
  • organisations consantly skip the IA process
  • technical staff need to take direction and advice from IAs

Problem with technical seos

content can be arranged :

  • by task/process
  • topic/subject
  • target audience
  • type
  • alphapbetical
  • chronological
  • spatial/geographical
  • attributes

only SEOs organise something via Keyword Tool

using the right tools but for the wrong reasons

usability test ? show someone a page and take it away after 8 seconds ? user should be able to tell you what is most important part of the site.

Be proactive rather than reactive ? not the algoholic approach

Dont skip the IA process ? will cost you a lot of money to fix.

Shari takes a mirror to meetings so you can explain to the client that they are not creating a site for a mirror of themselves

How human?s think

can i eat it, can it eat me ? can i have sex with it

relates to website architecture

eye tracking ? considering where people are actually looking on your site

how would you organise and label content for adults and children

organise your content for your target audience

interpretation of labelling by different audiences

GAS ? how it was interpreted by different audiences

petrol, flatulence, natural Gas

KEEP DATA IN CONTEXT

how + why = ROI

?

We are in a constant evolving industry where what was current 6 months can be now outdated.

Website strategy is as simple as it is complex

Defining strategies ? what, who, where, why and how

If you cannot answer why you are creating your website ?- STOP !!!!

Spending money and effort creating something that will be worthless.

Who are my users ??

  • technologies and devices
  • geolocation
  • gender
  • age
  • income
  • education
  • browsers & platforms

Biggest mistake site owners make is build a website for a user that is like them.

?

Pinterest ? 90% of users are women ? KNOW your users !!!

Geolocation -looking at where users are when they visit and interact with your site. ?Consider whether they are at work, travelling, shopping or at home ? this changes the way they use your site.

Our strategy is not based on guesswork and hunches, but data & fact & understanding our users.

Don?t design your tablet site like a mobile site, users use them like a desktop.

?

90% of people who hate a website never return to the site. ?They decide within 1-3 seconds whether they are going to interact with the site.

  • Homepage pathing ? you have 3 clicks to get someone on the journey. ?Once you have them, you should be able to keep them.
  • Site Architecture ? should limit to 6/7 dropdowns as this is all the user can handle.
  • Content Development ? maintaining it and who is in charge of it ???
  • Social Media Strategy ? what is your voice ? who is your voice ?
  • Usability -? this will become an Algorithm check

Technology?

The most overlooked part of the site is the technology.

  • non www?s and www?s resolving differently
  • robots.txt
  • sitemap ? updated every week
  • page speed
  • page weight
  • url construction
  • use of scripting where important content is concerned

?If it is good for users, it is good for search?

Where is the SEO ?

Everything we do is SEO now, if you run a website your SEO team is essential. ?They should be involved from Day One !!!

Search ?Experience? Optimisation ? hint from Google about where SEO is going ? less about the engine, more about the user.

?

  • search engines ? authorship and subjectship to improve results
  • social media integration ? facial recognition theory by Kristine in relation to Facebook and Bing
  • Device Chaos ? responsive design
  • Mobile vs Everything Else
  • mobile seo
  • mobile design
  • schema
  • content
  • social

If you arent doing any of the above, then you are already a long way behind.

where is strategy going ?

  • Identity ? Google+ will impact on this
  • Search without Search
  • Device entropy
  • non-website based data presentation
  • content APIs
  • identity for SEO
  • True Linguistic Search

The Holy Grail of Search is integrating all of the above and making it happen.

Responsive Design ? so important right now due to device recognition no longer being possible.

Shrinking your site until it becomes ugly and then review with responsive design.

Authorship is important ? it builds up rank over time. ?When hiring authors be aware of their background (bad history could hurt your site) and also be aware that if an strong author leaves then you will have to replace them with an equally strong author.

  • The changing face of the Music Industry, with the introduction of platforms such as Spotify.
  • TV as we know it is now dead, more people using streaming services such as Netflix

The Internet is so segmented with language barriers, the recognition of speech and machine translation is something we have been trying to overcome for 60 years.

  • Ericsson estimates 50 Billion connected devices in 2020

Hello, this is the future calling. is someone there ??

El?sabet?s hope for the future is that we can learn how people behave through their connections, and how people mistreat each other. ?Can we learn to make things better ?

Fixing a broken society through the changes that are coming. ?It is important that the connections that happen are beneficial rather than detrimental.

Todd Wilms ? leads strategy for Digital, Social and Communities at SAP

Our Content Problem

Content Pollution ? what happens in an Internet Minute ?

How to Solve It ?

Need ? empathize with your audience

  • Most of us think about what we want as humans

?As content creators that is the wrong approach, we are trying to connect with others through our content.

Check with Your Credit Union or Insurance Company for Big Savings when Car Shopping

Check with Your Credit Union or Insurance Company for Big Savings when Car Shopping Trying to get the best price on a new or used car is an uphill battle, but odds are you have some friends in your corner you didn't know about: Your credit union and your auto insurance provider.

You may already know to check with your credit union for financing on that new car, since their interest rates are likely lower than anything a bank or (heaven forbid) an auto dealer will offer you. However, credit unions also offer car buying and discount programs through selected auto dealerships that can cut hundreds?sometimes thousands?off of the sticker price of the car you want. Many car insurance providers, most notably USAA, participate in similar programs.

The folks at Kiplinger also note that select manufacturers offer discounts to credit unions and insurance companies, so sometimes it's best to start the search with the type of car you want to buy. They also suggest a free-to-join non-profit that can qualify you for a price cut. When we discussed online quoting as a way to get a good price, a few of you also mentioned that non-profits like AAA or CAA can also help you score a bargain. Hit the link below for a few more money-saving tips.

Data points to growing economic momentum

By Jason Lange

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A clutch of data pointed to growing momentum in the economy during the first quarter, with jobless claims trending lower and factory activity and homes sales both on the rise.

The reports on Thursday built on recent upbeat data on hiring and consumer spending that have led many economists to see a sharp rebound in economic growth despite the onset of increased fiscal austerity. In particular, the claims data suggested March could be another month of solid job gains.

"There is enough strength in the economy to generate jobs on a sustained basis," said Sam Bullard, an economist at Wells Fargo in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Forecasting firm Macroeconomic Advisers said the data backed its view that gross domestic product would expand at close to a 3 percent annual rate in the first three months of the year. The economy eked out a growth rate of just 0.1 percent in the fourth quarter.

However, Bullard and others noted that government belt tightening and the growing risk of a flare-up in Europe's debt crisis are creating headwinds for the economy that could still cause trouble ahead. On Wednesday, the Federal Reserve also indicated it was concerned about these issues when it pressed forward with its aggressive policy stimulus.

The federal government raised taxes on most Americans in January and a gaggle of budget cuts began this month, with the economic bite from reduced government spending expected to be concentrated in the next few months.

"The first quarter of 2013 is shaping up to be pretty good," said Joshua Dennerlein, an economist at Bank of America Merrill Lynch in New York. "(But) as the Fed noted yesterday, we are worried about the second and third quarter with the fiscal tightening."

While the number of Americans filing new claims for jobless benefits edged higher last week to 336,000, a trend reading dropped to its lowest level in five years.

That bodes well for job creation in March because the data covered the survey period for the government's monthly tally of nonfarm jobs. The four-week average of new claims fell last week to 339,750, down 6 percent relative to the survey week in February, when nonfarm payrolls increased by 236,000.

Gennadiy Goldberg, a strategist at TD Securities in New York, said the four-week average, which is seen as a measure of labor market trends, was consistent with a March payroll reading above 200,000.

BUILDING STEAM

Separately, two surveys of industry showed an increase in activity at American factories despite weakness in overseas markets like Europe.

The Philadelphia Federal Reserve Bank said manufacturing activity in the mid-Atlantic region grew in March after contracting for two months in a row.

Also, financial data firm Markit said its preliminary Manufacturing Purchasing Managers Index, which gauges activity nationwide, increased to 54.9 this month from 54.3 in February.

Data on the housing sector, which was blighted by the 2007-09 recession, was also upbeat.

Home resales hit a three-year high in February and prices jumped, adding to signs of an acceleration in the housing market recovery.

The National Association of Realtors said existing home sales increased 0.8 percent to an annual rate of 4.98 million units last month, the highest level since November 2009. The January sales pace was revised up a 4.94 million units from the previously reported 4.92 million units.

Another measure of home prices by the Federal Housing Finance Agency showed a 0.6 percent gain in January.

Also pointing to momentum in the economy, a gauge of future economic activity rose for a third straight month in February.

The positive signs on the economy were overshadowed in financial markets by a decline in tech sector shares and by worries that a banking crisis in Cyprus could enflame the European crisis. Stocks fell, as did yields on government debt.

Cyprus works on Plan B to stave off bankruptcy

NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) ? Cypriot officials rushed Wednesday to find a new plan to stave off bankruptcy, a day after Parliament rejected an initial scheme to contribute to the nation's bailout package by seizing up to 10 percent of people's bank savings.

Tuesday's decisive rejection of the plan to take a slice of all deposits above 20,000 euros ($25,888) has left the country's bailout in question. Without the bailout, the Cypriot banking sector would collapse, devastating the country's economy and potentially causing it to leave the euro.

That could roil global financial markets as well as endanger deposits in the country even further.

Government spokesman Christos Stylianides said a meeting was underway at the central bank to discuss an alternative plan for raising funds, but also for reducing the 5.8 billion euros ($7.5 billion) that must be found domestically.

President Nicos Anastasiades met with the representatives of his country's potential creditors ? the International Monetary Fund, European Central Bank and European Commission ? but issued no statement on the result. The three, known as the troika, must sign off on any Plan B the Cypriots come up with if it is to be approved as part of the bailout.

The ECB, which is keeping the Cypriot banking sector alive by allowing the central bank to extend emergency support, has said it would end that aid if there was no bailout deal and it was clear the banks had no hope of becoming solvent again.

For now, the ECB says it will continue extending its support. But experts note that if there's no bailout deal within days, the ECB will have to end it.

Under the initial bailout plan conceived in Brussels last weekend, other eurozone countries and the IMF would give Cyprus 10 billion euros ($12.9 billion) in rescue loans if the country raised 5.8 billion euros ($7.5 billion) through the bank deposit seizures.

The plan was initially to take 6.75 percent of deposits up to 100,000 euros and 9.9 percent on those above that threshold. That caused outrage, leading the government to propose an amended version that would have spared deposits up to 20,000 euros. But that new plan also failed to win over Cypriot lawmakers.

The central bank's deputy governor, Spyros Stavrinakis, said no decision had been taken on when banks, which have been shut since the weekend, would reopen, and that a new plan has not yet been presented to the country's euro partners and IMF.

The banks remained shut for the third day running to avoid a bank run, and there are growing expectations they may not reopen until next week ? certainly not until Cypriot authorities come up with a credible financial package that has the troika's blessing.

The new plan must also win approval from lawmakers.

In a two-pronged approach to the crisis, Finance Minister Michalis Sarris was in Moscow for meetings with his Russian counterpart. Russia could play a key role in any alternative package that may emerge. Russians are believed to account for just under a third of Cyprus's 68 billion euro bank deposits.

"We will be here until some kind of agreement is reached," Sarris said.

In Nicosia, residents waited anxiously to see what lay in store for them.

Avetis Bahcecian has been running his Armenian restaurant in Nicosia for years. Now, with the uncertainty swirling around Cyprus, he's worried about his business.

"Whatever they do, they have to do it quickly because this uncertainty is hurting business," the 41-year-old said as he kneaded dough to make lahmacun, a traditional Armenian pizza-style food. "Our business is down by 40 percent in the last couple days."

ATMs have been dispensing cash and debit and credit cards have been working, so Cypriots have not faced any immediate cash shortage for day-to-day living.

A Cypriot financial official said authorities were working on bills which would need parliamentary approval aiming to limit the amount of money leaving the country, and that a decision would be announced later on how long the banks would remain closed. The official spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to release the information.

A government official said an alternative plan to raise the 5.8 billion euros had been drafted and was to be presented to the troika, most likely on Wednesday. The plan would raise money from domestic sources, including pension plans and subsidiaries of foreign banks active in Cyprus.

One of those domestic sources may be the country's influential Orthodox church.

Its head, Archbishop Chrysostomos II, said he would put the church's assets at the country's disposal, saying the church was willing to mortgage its assets to invest in government bonds. The church has considerable wealth, including property, stakes in a bank and a brewery.

"The wealth of the church is at the disposal of the country," Chrysostomos said after meeting with Anastasiades Wednesday morning.

What's your best time-saving trick?

Not sure what I would do without Magic Text. The app has changed my life.

What's your favorite to-do list manager?

Well, obviously, TeuxDeux. I created it together with some of my studiomates. If you like making lists, and live in your browser, you will most probably like my app.

Besides your phone and computer, what gadget can't you live without?

My Kindle.

I'm Tina Roth Eisenberg, Founder of Swissmiss, and This Is How I Work

What everyday thing are you better at than anyone else?

Keeping my kids entertained on long-distance flights. I have it down to a science!

What's your sleep routine like?

I try to sleep at least 8 hours. My kids are my alarm clocks.

Are you more of an introvert or an extrovert?

Extrovert all the way. I love meeting new people! I have no problem chatting up people even in the oddest circumstances. Also, I met my husband in an elevator.

Fill in the blank. I'd kill to see _______ answer these same questions.

Michael Galpert and Ping Fu.

What's the best advice you've ever received?

Listen to your gut.

Is there anything else you'd like to add?

I've just given a very personal talk at SXSW in which I talk about my 11 rules and values I live by, both in my professional and personal life. Watch it here.

The How I Work series asks heroes, experts, brilliant, and flat-out productive people to share their shortcuts, workspaces, routines, and more. Every Wednesday we'll feature a new guest and the gadgets, apps, tips, and tricks that keep them going. Have someone you'd kill to see featured, or questions you think we should ask? Email Tessa.
