SIMI VALLEY, Calif. (AP) ? U.S. Rep. Elton Gallegly, who has represented California's Ventura County for 25 years, says he will not seek re-election and will retire at the end of the current Congress.
Rep. Elton Gallegly, R-Calif., who has represented California's Ventura County for 25 years, says he will not seek re-election.
The 67-year-old Republican announced in a written statement Saturday that he and his wife Janice are looking forward to spending more time with their family and friends.
A former real estate broker, Gallegly was elected to Simi Valley's City Council in 1979 and later became the city's mayor.
He ran for Congress in 1986 and was reelected twelve times.
Gallegly chairs the Judiciary Committee's Subcommittee on Immigration Policy and Enforcement and is vice chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee.
He's among four Republican congressmen who are in or are likely to compete in predominantly Democratic districts because of redistricting in California.
