Content management system in plain English | Pretty Smart Sites

Content management system (CMS) is a steering panel of your website. Without it, you would have to get your website designer / coder to implement any changes that you?d like to make to your site.

It?s like owning a PC and needing an IT guy every time you need to send an email.

The more powerful the CMS, the more you will be able to do with it.
Many web design companies offer websites with a simple CMS they have developed themselves.
Even with the simplest CMS you should be able to:

  • edit your pages
  • insert links
  • insert images
  • insert video
  • access HTML code (I know you don?t know HTML, but you might need to paste in some code ? Google Analytics for example)
  • add and delete pages
  • add, delete, or change links in the menu bar on your page

There are also many widely used CMS platforms, with WordPress being the most popular among small business owners.

WordPress allows you to create a range of websites which include a blog and can be easily optimised for SEO. It is still, however, a relatively simple platform. For more technically advanced solutions you might want to look at more powerful CMS platforms like Joomla, Drupal, or Magento.

All of these platforms are free to download, so if you know how to build websites using one of them, your website might not cost you anything.

The majority of website owners, however, have to rely on web developers to build them their sites. The general rule is that the more powerful (and complicated) the CMS, the more it?s going to cost you in terms of labour costs. You can get a nice WordPress site built pretty cheaply. A Drupal-powered website can set you back a good several thousand pounds.
