An end to Washington's great ski season run?

The snow level was still down to 4,500 feet the other day as a typically wet June weather pattern settled across the Pacific Northwest. The spring precipitation will add to another good year of snowpack in the mountains, one of the benefits of a La Ni?a weather year. Still, climate projections paint a bleaker picture for next year's weather patterns.?

Most of us know that snowpack in the mountains is like a giant water bank. Snow piles up in the mountains, then melts to provide water for Washingtonians, irrigating eastern Washington farms, watering lawns and urban household gardens. In addition to all this water, good snow provides a boost to the economy in winter months, when ski areas bustle with skiiers and boarders.

This spring Crystal Mountain tentatively plans to remain open on weekends through July 1. ?We are one of only two places in North America still offering lift serviced skiing,? Crystal reported on its web site. ?The snow has melted at the base area, but there's still plenty of snow and great coverage up top."

According the Climate Prediction Center at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), La Ni?a is fading and there is a 50-50 chance of an El Ni?o weather pattern developing this fall.

Why pay attention? As Cliff Mass, regional weather guru writes, ?El Ni?o years tend to be drier, with less snow in the lowland and mountains, and weaker storms.? That can translate not just into bad skiing years, but into drought-like conditions come summer.

Just a few years ago, in 2005, weather patterns were similar. ?What a year to remember, certainly one for the record books,? read the Basin Outlook Report for June. ?Records set over 30 years ago and thought to be un-breakable fell by the wayside during this unprecedented year of low snowpack, precipitation and runoff.?

The early 1990s were also host to several years of low snowpack, leading Seattle City Light to impose a ?drought surcharge? to cover the impact on utility revenues. That's in comparison to typical summers, when Seattle City Light actually sells its excess hydropower to California and Arizona, which have peak demand in the summer because of air conditioning.

By contrast, our winter weather of the past two years has been driven by La Ni?a, which tends to pile up the snow in the mountains, especially after the first of the year. In 2011 April and May set snowfall records, dumping 200 percent of average snowfall in some places. Cool temperatures meant snowpack levels were sustained well into the spring, as described in the June 2011 Basin Outlook Report from the National Resources Conservation Service:

?Though all basins are above the 30-year average it is important to keep in mind that this mostly is not due to excessive late season snow accumulation but the extreme lag of normal snowmelt. Another way to look at it is that normally Washington would have about 40 percent of the peak snow accumulation still on the ground, meaning that 60 percent would have (already) melted. As of June 1 (2011) that number sits at 97 percent which means that we still have almost all of an ?average? snowpack to melt out.?

Through this summer at least, water should be plentiful. The ?water year? usually runs from October through September of the following year. This June?s Basin Outlook Report is the most recent for this "water year":

?For the most part we experienced above average temperatures and dry conditions the first half of the month with the second half bringing wetter and cooler than normal west side weather and dry and cool on the east side of the state. The snow is melting at a pace to rival ?watching paint dry,? however we still have only 50-75 percent of what we had on the ground at this time last year."

Snowpack is tracked using instruments called SNOTELs that measure snow depth and water content at hundreds of sites around the state. While June 1 statewide SNOTEL readings were 182 percent of average, experts caution that at this time of year, that can easily change ? both with additional snow (which is rare) and snow melt (the usual condition).

?As temperatures warm the melt rate will increase, rapidly changing percentages on a daily basis,? NRCS said.? ?Numerous lower and mid elevation sites have already melted out and by the time this article is published [June 8] even more will have melted. That?s not to forget the higher elevation sites that still have over 20 feet of snow and won?t melt out until late July or August, providing fresh runoff throughout the entire summer.?

The NRCS' point is well-taken. The Nooksack Basin in northwestern Washington had the highest snow-water content of any reporting station on June 1, with 84 inches (well above the 49.6 inch average). By June 21 it had dropped to 64 inches.?

It's likely that projected summer climes will only accelerate the melting. The Climate Prediction Center is forecasting abnormally warm and dry conditions in most of the Pacific Northwest through the next several months.

With relatively high snowpack this year, there are few concerns about water in 2012. Meanwhile, we all await the traditional start of summer in the Northwest ? somewhere around July 10. Still, if the El Ni?o does form, get ready for change.

'Hispanic Oprah' Endorses President Obama

Days after President Obama announced that his administration would no longer deport young undocumented immigrants, the woman often dubbed the "Hispanic Oprah" made her first-ever presidential endorsement, pledging her support for Obama on Sunday.

Cristina Saralegui, who has hosted a popular Univision talk show for more than twenty years, is featured in two Obama for America campaign videos, one in English and one in Spanish.

"I came to this country when I was twelve years old because my parents wanted to give me new opportunities to succeed," Saralegui says in the video. "President Obama wants everyone to have the chances I had."

Saralegui's support comes as both Obama and Romney are making a push to court Hispanic voters, one of the fastest-growing voting blocs. If endorsements from Latino celebrities are any guide, Obama has a head start over Romney, with Saralegui joining the likes of Eva Longoria and Ricky Martin on the president's side.

Here's a look at celebrities who have put their star power behind Obama, Romney or other candidates in the 2012 race for the White House.

Director Spike Lee, an ardent Obama supporter in 2008, is less optimistic about the president's election prospects this time around, telling GQ magazine in an article published June 12 that an Obama win in November "is not a lock."

"The people have to get out and vote," Lee said. "It is not a lock that President Obama is getting a second term, and people have to really rekindle the enthusiasm that we had the first time."

As for Mitt Romney, Lee said the best thing he has going for him is that "he's not Obama."

"Once we get to the debates my man [Obama] is going to tear him up!" Lee said. "It's going to be obvious who should lead this country for the next four years once they go head to head, toe to toe, elbow to elbow, butt to butt. And I don't think Mr. Romney can hang with him. He just can't!"

Lee and his wife, Tonya Lewis Lee, hosted the president at their New York City brownstone home for a $35,800-per-ticket fundraiser in January.

During his remarks to the crowd of about 40 supporters, Obama told the movie producer/director that on his "first official date" with Michelle Obama, he took her to see "Do the Right Thing," which Lee wrote and directed in 1989.

"I think you helped me out that day," Obama said. "So it worked out, which is why I've always had a soft spot for Spike Lee in my heart."

If there's any lingering doubt about whether rapper Jay-Z is an Obama supporter, as he was in 2008, the hip-hop megastar dispelled it in June.

In an interview with CNN, Jay-Z said President Obama is a better choice for the country than Mitt Romney "by leaps and bounds."

The rapper praised Obama's recent support for same-sex marriage, saying the issue "is still holding the country back."

"You can chose to love whoever you love; that's your business," Jay-Z, 42, said. "It's no different than discrimination against blacks. It's discrimination plain and simple."

Jay-Z and wife Beyonce have been ardent Obama supporters since his 2008 campaign. And the president is equally supportive of the hip-hop duo. When The Atlantic asked whether he preferred Jay-Z or Kanye West, Obama said, without hesitation, "Jay-Z."

Beyonce showed her love for the first family in January, writing a letter to Michelle Obama in which she said the first lady was "the ULTIMATE example of a truly strong African American woman."

International pop star Ricky Martin, famous for hits like "Livin' La Vida Loca," swung his infamously leather pants clad hips in step behind President Obama, endorsing him for the 2012 election.

The openly gay singer hosted a fundraiser with Obama in New York just days after the president publicly declared his support for same-sex marriage in May.

"I applaud President @barackobama for affirming that ALL Americans should enjoy equal rights," Martin tweeted shortly after the president's announcement. "Historic! I will be a very proud host on Monday."

While the fundraiser was scheduled weeks before Obama's announcement, it takes on a new significance following Obama's assertion that "same sex couples should be able to get married."

"I am proud to support our president," Martin told Univision's Spanish-language program Primer Imapcto after announcing the fundraiser in April.

"I believe Barack Obama has shown a deep conviction to help those most in need, even if their voices are not always the ones heard the loudest in Washington," Martin continued. "He has also been an exceptionally strong advocate for the Latino and LGBT communities, leading us to precedent setting milestones such as the appointment of the first Hispanic Supreme Court Justice and the repeal of [Don't Ask, Don't Tell]."

He already loves the cheesy grits. He has perfected the twang in his "y'all." And in order to further beef up his Southern street cred before the Alabama and Mississippi primaries, Mitt Romney called in the blue-collar cavalry.

Self-proclaimed Redneck comedian Jeff Foxworthy joined Romney on the Alabama campaign trail in March, just days before the state's primary election, after endorsing the GOP candidate via Twitter.

"Time for Republicans to unite behind Governor Romney, a great leader who can win the White House and rebuild our economy for all Americans," Foxworthy tweeted.

The "Blue Collar Comedy Tour" headliner most famous for his "you might be a redneck if..." jokes went out on the stump to support Romney amid a torrential downpour in Mobile, Ala., before traveling to two additional meet and greets in Biloxi, Mississippi and Richland, Mississippi.

How sweet is it to be loved by James Taylor? If you're President Obama, it's pretty sweet considering the sing/songwriter is embarking on an 18-city concert tour through a handful of battleground states.

Taylor, who endorsed Obama in 2008 as well, said he will throw a little politics between the fire and rain on his folk-rock tour this year.

"I am so -- I really love this president. I love what it says about America, that we were able to elect this man," Taylor, 63, said in an interview with local North Carolina TV affiliate WCNC.

The North Carolina native will sing the president's praises in tough general election states like Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, Ohio and Colorado.

Hollywood may be leaning toward President Obama, but the rockers seem to be picking Romney. Ted Nugent came out in support of Mitt Romney shortly after Kid Rock made a guest appearance on the Romney campaign trial to play his song "Born Free."

Nugent announced his endorsement on Twitter, telling his 44,000 followers "after a long heart & soul conversation with Mitt Romney today I concluded this good man will properly represent we the people & I endorsed him."

Nugent, who is from Michigan but now lives in Texas, told the Texas Tribune that before deciding on his endorsement he spoke with Romney over the phone to make sure the former Massachusetts governor would not enact any gun law restrictions and would help rein in what he dubbed the "out of control" U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

"The conclusion based on all the evidence I can find is that Mitt Romney has the best shot at bringing the U.S. Constitution, common sense, and the American way back to the White House," Nugent told the Tribune.

But Romney was not Nugent's first choice for president.

"It is my firm belief that Rick Perry would have [made] and would make the best president we could choose," Nugent said, adding that he was baffled by Perry's debate performances. "If the real Rick Perry had been at those debates, he would still be in the race."

Kid Rock found his presidential jam the day before his home state's voters found their polling places. The rapper-turned-country-rocker belted out "Born Free," Mitt Romney's official campaign song, at the presidential candidate's final Michigan rally before Romney's home state voted Feb. 28.

While the musician did not actually endorse Romney, he insisted on a personal meeting with the GOP candidate before he agreed to take the stage at Romney's rally.

"The other day I got in my car and I drove out to a home of a fellow that lives in this area, and I asked him whether he might come here tonight," Romney said before introducing Kid Rock. "He said, 'If you're elected president, will you help me help the city of Detroit?' I said I would. And then I turned to him, and I said, 'By the way, given the fact that I'm willing to do those things, will you come here and perform a concert tonight for my friends, and he said he would."

Rock's pseudo-endorsement represents a change of heart for the music star. During the last presidential race, Rock, whose real name is Bob Ritchie, said celebrities should keep their political opinions to themselves.

"I truly believe that people like myself, who are in a position of entertainers in the limelight, should keep their mouth shut on politics," he told CMT Insider. "Because at the end of the day, I'm good at writing songs and singing. What I'm not educated in is the field of political science. And so for me to be sharing my views and influencing people of who I think they should be voting for ... I think would be very irresponsible on my part."

Rock went on to say that celebrity endorsements actually "hurt politicians."

"As soon as somebody comes out for a politician, especially in Hollywood, when they all go, 'I'm voting for this guy!' -- I go, 'That's not who I'm voting for!'" Rock said in the 2008 interview.

While another comedian makes a mockery of Super PACs, liberal jokester Bill Maher put $1 million worth of support behind the pro-Obama Super PAC Priorities USA.

Maher said he decided to write the mega-check to Priorities "partially out of fear -- fear of Santorum and Romney," who he said live in a "bubble of insanity."

"Half the country is nuts, and Obama could very well lose," Maher told the Los Angeles Times after announcing his donation in February. "He may not have been the best president in his first term, but given the alternative, I feel there's a clear choice.

"Unless the rich liberals get into the game," Maher added, "Obama will be horribly outspent. If he is outspent, he stands a good chance of losing."

Maher told ABC News that he hoped his hefty donation would inspire other wealthy Democrats to do the same.

"Hey, rich liberals," he said. "If I can do this, there's a lot of people who can do it even easier."

To say that actress Eva Longoria is an Obama supporter would be a glaring understatement.

Not only has the "Desperate Housewives" star publicly announced her support for the president and held high-dollar fundraisers to fill his election war chest, she is one of two big names in Hollywood who signed on to be one of 35 "ambassadors" for his re-election campaign.

Longoria will spearhead efforts to reach women and Hispanic voters leading up to the 2012 election, Obama's re-election campaign announced in February. Kalpen Modi (aka Kal Penn) is the only other actor on the list.

Before a high-dollar fundraising dinner with the president in September, Longoria told Jimmy Kimmel that Obama has been "very receptive" to her in her efforts to promote Latino issues.

"I'm a big Obama supporter no matter what he's been through -- he's been beaten up the past couple of years," Longoria said, according to the Huffington Post. "He's been very receptive for me, I'm a big advocate for Latino issues, and so he's been a big listener and he's done a lot of coalitions and roundtables regarding what we want changed."

Longoria helped raise between $200,000 and $500,000 for Obama's re-election in 2011 and in she helped inspire additional online donations in December when the Obama campaign raffled off a dinner with the actress to five online donors.

Chuck Norris' endorsement of Newt Gingrich was nearly as epic as the decades of jokes about his larger-than-life persona.

"Civilization is on the brink," Norris wrote in a WND.com editorial. "We need a veteran of political war who has already fought Goliath, because he will be facing Goliath's bigger brother. [Gingrich] is the best man left on the battlefield who is able to outwit, outplay and outlast Obama and his campaign machine."

After the endorsement, Gingrich anointed Norris as a member of his "Faith Leaders Dream Team," a group of what he called "fearless Christians" who serve as Gingrich's "official advisory coalition on issues pertaining to life, marriage, and religious liberty," according to his campaign website.

If you ask Donald Trump, the most important endorsement of the GOP primary was Donald Trump's, which he bestowed on Mitt Romney after a whirlwind of rumors that the real estate mogul was going to pick Newt Gingrich.

Trump officially announced his endorsement in the Trump International Hotel on the Las Vegas strip shortly before the Nevada Caucus.

"Mitt is tough, he's smart, he's sharp, he's not going to allow bad things to continue to happen to this country that we all love," Trump said. "So, Gov. Romney, go out and get 'em. You can do it."

Hollywood humor met primary politics when actor Vince Vaughn endorsed Rep. Ron Paul while introducing him at the Liberty Political Action Conference in September.

"Ron and Vince are friends, with Vince not merely interested in Dr. Paul's philosophy but he also graciously invited Dr. and Mrs. Paul to the premier of his film 'Couples Retreat,'" Paul's campaign manager Jesse Benton said in a statement, according to Slate.

Vaughn is a long-time supporter of Paul, having endorsed his 2009 book "End the Fed," as well.

Having a three-time Academy Award winning director on your side is not only good for morale; it's also great for fundraising. Director Steven Spielberg donated nearly $150,000 to Democratic election efforts in 2011, including $5,000 to Obama's campaign and $100,000 to pro-Obama super PAC Priorities USA, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

While Spielberg is a long-time supporter of the Democratic Party, he was not one of the original Hollywood Obama-backers. During the 2008 Democratic primary, Spielberg endorsed Obama's opponent Hillary Clinton.

Supermodel City Crawford was a firm supporter of Barack Obama in 2008, with both she and her husband contributing the federal limit to the Illinois senator's presidential campaign.

But in 2012, the model-turned-actress is putting her bet on Mitt Romney. Crawford appeared in an early campaign video for the former Massachusetts governor, although her spokeswoman told CNN at the time that Crawford was "not politically aligned with any party or candidate" and merely doing a favor for one of Romney's sons, with whom she was friends.

While pop star Kelly Clarkson did not officially endorse Ron Paul, the original "American Idol" winner tweeted some Ron Paul Revolution love to her 1.1 million followers back in December.

"I love Ron Paul," Clarkson tweeted. "I liked him a lot during the last Republican nomination, and no one gave him a chance. If he wins the nomination for the Republican Party in 2012, he's got my vote. Too bad he probably won't."

Clarkson's tepid support ignited a deluge of 140-character criticisms from her Twitter fans, many of whom were apparently unhappy about racist newsletters Paul sent out during his decades-long tenure as a Texas congressman.

Clarkson later apologized to her Twitter fans for throwing her support behind Paul.

"I am really sorry if I have offended anyone," Clarkson tweeted. "Obviously, that was not my intent. I do not support racism. I support gay rights, straight rights, women's rights, men's rights, white/black/purple/orange rights. I like Ron Paul because he believes in less government and letting the people (all of us) make the decisions and mold our country. That is all. Out of all of the Republican nominees, he's my favorite."

In an interview for Rolling Stone in March, Clarkson said she was flabbergasted by the instant outrage that her political-themed tweet incited.

"I'm hanging out with my brother and my little niece, playing Barbies, and Ron Paul comes on TV," she said according to Politico. "He doesn't BS around anything. I was like, 'This dude is refreshing.' All I did was tweet what I thought, and people went crazy! All of a sudden people were like, 'You hate gay people' -- what? I didn't even endorse him! All I said was that I liked him. I voted for Barack, so it's not even like I'm a hardcore Republican."

Apparently pop stars flock together when it comes to presidential endorsements. Shortly after Kelly Clarkson tweeted her support for Ron Paul, fellow pop princess Michelle Branch retweeted her support, writing, "@kelly_clarkson I wholeheartedly agree. #RonPaul."

Branch is best known for her early 2000s hits "Breathe" and "All You Wanted."

Actor George Clooney was an Obama supporter before being an Obama supporter was cool. In a 2006 interview with ABC News, Clooney said then-Sen. Obama was "the most charismatic person I've been in a room with in a long time."

"I must tell you, I've never seen anybody in my life in person that was as qualified this young to do what I think we need done," Clooney said.

And six years later, Clooney is still a firm Obama supporter. Clooney was on the guest list at a $35,800 per person fundraising dinner in Los Angeles during the president's West Coast fundraising spree last week.

"I'm disillusioned by the people who are disillusioned by Obama, quite honestly, I am," Clooney said on ABC News Now's "Popcorn with Peter Travers" before the October release of "The Ides of March," a political movie that he wrote, directed and starred in. "Democrats eat their own. Democrats find singular issues and go, 'Well, I didn't get everything I wanted.' I'm a firm believer in sticking by and sticking up for the people whom you've elected."

Gene Simmons, the bassist in the rock band Kiss, chose team Romney in January, telling Big Hollywood that Romney has the best chance of beating President Obama.

"Who's got a chance? Mitt Romney's got a chance and he's got the experience," Simmons said in the Big Hollywood interview. "He's run successful companies, knows how to make money. I believe Mitt Romney and President Obama are going to have a very good dialogue, and I want to hear that dialogue."

In what is becoming typical rock star fashion, Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry used Twitter to tell the world he was voting for Ron Paul.

"Obama hasn't done anything close to what he promised he'd do," Perry tweeted in January. "Didn't get my vote and I got lotta grief. Well, my votes for Ron Paul."

The 1950s singer, actor and author Pat Boone, 77, threw his support behind Rick Santorum, saying in a statement that Santorum is "experienced, honest and deeply principled," according to Politico.

"I am excited to endorse Rick Santorum for president. I've known Rick for many years, and Rick has been a consistent defender of conservatism and the values our great nation was founded upon," Boone said in a statement released by Santorum's campaign.

Boone, whose rendition of Little Richard's "Tutti Fruiti" sent him to the top of the Billboard charts, is an outspoken critic of President Obama. He told the San Francisco chronicle in September that he believes the president was born in Kenya, is a Muslim and is "spending millions" to hide his real birth certificate. Each charge was refuted after Obama released both his certificate of live birth and long-form birth certificate.

The Donald might not be running for president, but if he were, he would enjoy the backing of one of his fellow reality-TV superstars, Snooki. The "Jersey Shore" diva, whose real name is Nicole Polizzi, told the Huffington Post in January that Donald Trump would be her pick for president.

"I thought Trump was going to run," Snooki told the Huffington Post. "But he's not, right? I would endorse him and vote for him."

Steve Carell's apocalypse plans? Chow down

By Randee Dawn

If the world was coming to an end, what would you grab? Steve Carell, who stars with Keira Knightley in the new film "Seeking a Friend for the End of the World," has a pretty good idea what he'd pick up -- food. Lots of food.

"I would just grab food," he told TODAY's Ann Curry Thursday. "I would eat so much crap if I knew that we had just a couple of weeks left. Of course, then you start thinking, well, is anything going to be open? I'd love to go to a great restaurant and have a wonderful meal. ... I just want deep-fried, I want pasta, I want to carbo-load for doomsday."

That's not quite what happens in "Seeking"; instead, Carell plays a man whose wife walks out on him after they learn the world is set to end in a matter of weeks, and he opts to track down his high school sweetheart, bringing along friend Knightley and his terrier on the journey.?

"It does not sound at like a light comedy; that is what attracted me to it," said Carell. "It's a metaphor for how to live your life and finding the joy and finding those special moments and finding special people within it."

One special moment transpired between Carell and his real-life wife, Nancy Walls, who plays the wife who walks out on him in the film. And the scene -- which was taped on the couple's 16th wedding anniversary -- put an interesting spin on the interplay between the two, according to Carell.

"She shoots me this look (in the scene) and I would love a freeze-frame of it because it's scary as hell. And the director even said, 'Wow, have you seen that in your life before?' And I have, and hope to never see it again."

"Seeking a Friend for the End of the World" opens June 22.

Lessening Financial Stress With Payday Loans - Information ...

One of the biggest stresses in life is finances. Having enough money to pay all the bills and to take care of your family is a worthy goal that all of us strive to achieve.

Life throws challenges at us every day. Sometimes, we do not have the money to meet all our needs before the next paycheck.

Where can we turn when this occurs? Often, you just don't have the time to wait until receiving the next paycheck.

There are needs that necessitate receiving money on the spot. Payday lenders are there to lend us a small amount of money for a short time.

They offer this service because they know the struggle with money and understand that sometimes we all need a little help to get back on our feet. Payday lenders offer payday loans that act as a cash advance.

The loan can be as long or as short as you need, but generally last until your next payday. This makes it possible for you to quickly pay off your cash advance.

Payday loans give you the peace of mind that your family is provided for and that you can quickly pay off the balance due. If in one month there is a hospital visit, car maintenance, or other issues there may be a financial concern.

In order to alleviate the stress of these situations you may think of ways to get around paying for a month. Things like writing a faulty check, skipping bills for the month, etc.

These options will only add more stress the next month. Choosing a payday loan will help you receive cash in order to fulfill your financial commitments.

If you do write a check and there is not enough money in the bank account that check will bounce. A check that bounces often results in a hefty overdraft fee, leaving your bank account empty and at risk for more overdraft fees.

You want to avoid this situation. It will be better for your stress level and your credit score.

One of the best ways you can deal with a problem like this is to get a payday loan. When getting a cash advance for one hundred dollars you would owe a little more than one dollar a day.

At the end of two weeks, it would be close to one hundred and fifteen dollars. You can receive anywhere from one dollars to fifteen hundred in a payday loan and you can borrow money for up to thirty-one days.

If you're getting paid and receiving your paycheck in less than two weeks, than the amount you would owe on the payday loan would end up being less than in the example above. In this situation getting a payday loan would be a better financial decision.

One thing that scares people about payday loans is the annual percentage rate. When getting a payday loan, you will receive an annual percentage rate from your payday lender.

The annual percentage rate, also known as APR, determines how much interest will be charged on a loan for a year. In other words, APR determines how much a person pays in interest on any borrowed money.

The longer the loan lasts, the lower the APR can be for the lender to still make a profit. Because payday loans last such a short time, usually only two weeks or less, they tend have very high APRs.

Getting a payday loan is a very simple process. All you need is to provide a valid state or federally issued ID, a checking account with your personal name on it, and some proof of income, like a paystub.

You can bring these into any payday lender and you can receive cash that same day. The simple process of getting a payday loan and receiving cash on the same day can help keep your stress to a minimum.

Upon showing the lender your information, he will discuss with you how much you need to cover your costs and how long your payday loan should last. From this you can directly calculate the amount of money you will owe the payday lender.

After agreeing to the terms, a check is written for the loan amount plus the fees and dated for the day when the loan expires. Then you receive the cash you requested right there on the spot.

When you act responsibly with your money you can benefit from payday loans. When money gets tight payday loans can be there to help keep your extra stress to a minimum.

Oil above $83 as traders eye Iran nuclear talks

(06-18) 21:54 PDT SINGAPORE, (AP) --

Oil hovered above $83 a barrel Tuesday in Asia as traders closely watched talks between Iran and six world powers over the Middle Eastern country's nuclear program.

Benchmark oil for July delivery was down 16 cents to $83.11 a barrel at midday Singapore time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 76 cents to settle at $83.27 in New York on Monday.

In London, Brent crude for August delivery was up 5 cents at $96.10 per barrel on the ICE Futures exchange.

Negotiators from Iran are in talks with counterparts from six world powers ? the United States, Britain, France, Russia, China and Germany ? Monday and Tuesday in Moscow, the third such meeting in recent months.

On Monday, Iran became more adamant that the world must ease the sanctions choking off its oil sales before it will curb activities that could be used to make nuclear arms. But the six world powers insisted that Tehran take the first conciliatory step.

Crude has plunged from $110 in February as fears eased that the U.S. or Israel would attack Iranian nuclear facilities and disrupt global oil supplies. Signs of slowing economic growth and oil demand in the U.S., Europe and China have also pushed prices lower.

"Softening Iranian tensions and deteriorating fundamentals are responsible for the majority of the correction," Morgan Stanley said in a report. "New signs of emerging market weakness, in China in particular, present downside risks to global demand growth. A fall in Brent to the low $90s is possible."

In other energy trading, heating oil was up 0.4 cent at $2.62 per gallon while gasoline futures rose 0.1 cent at $2.59 per gallon. Natural gas gained 1.5 cents at $2.65 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Galaxy beats Portland, 1-0, with Josh Saunders back in goal

Josh Saunders was back at work for the first time in two months Sunday. And even though he's never publicly explained where he's been or why exactly he went there, the Galaxy were clearly glad to have their starting goalkeeper back.

The team hadn't won since late April, when Saunders enrolled in Major League Soccer's substance abuse and behavioral health program to be treated for an undisclosed condition at an undisclosed location. And the team hadn't shut out an opponent since Saunders blanked the Houston Dynamo in last November's MLS Cup final.

Both those streaks came to an end Sunday in a 1-0 win over the Portland Timbers at the Home Depot Center before a matinee crowd announced at 20,611.

The only goal came on defender Todd Dunivant's controversial header off a David Beckham corner kick in the 61st minute. Galaxy captain Landon Donovan appeared to block Portland keeper Troy Perkins on the play, a move Perkins vehemently protested to referee Geoff Gamble, earning a yellow card.

And though the score was Dunivant's first in MLS play in more than two years and the assist was Beckham's fifth of the season, much of the talk afterward centered on Saunders.

"It was a big night for him coming back," Dunivant said of his keeper. "It was a kind of big deal."

Said Saunders with a smile: "It felt great. It was very special."

Saunders didn't wait long before being welcomed back to the pitch, with Kris Boyd's wicked left-footed blast from 10 yards ? a shot Saunders said he never saw ? getting through the keeper's hands and striking him in the face in the seventh minute. Boyd tested the keeper again 18 minutes later, this time with a low right-footed shot from just outside the box that was headed for the corner of the net before a diving Saunders got his right hand on it for the second of his four saves on the day.

"Two big saves like that is what you need in these kind of games," Dunivant said. "We didn't give him a lot of chances, but when we did he bailed us out. And that's what you need out of your goalkeeper."

Beckham, playing for the second time this year in front of British Olympic Coach Stuart Pearce, nearly repaid the favor by getting Saunders an insurance goal in the 72nd minute. But his bending free kick from about 30 yards curled just wide of the near post.

One goal wound up being enough, though, giving the Galaxy its first win in eight tries and lifting it out of the Western Conference cellar to within five points of a playoff berth with 20 games left. With Saunders in goal the team is 4-3-0; without him it's 0-5-2.

"Let's not get carried away," Donovan cautioned. "It's one win. But a great win and everyone feels good about it."

PFT: Welker, friends 'tackled' by security in Aspen

Jonathan Vilma Portrait ShootGetty Images

The evidence against Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma includes considerably more than a page of handwritten notes.

During Monday afternoon?s appeal hearing in the bounty case, NFL outside counsel Mary Jo White explained to the players and lawyers present (including at least one lawyer from the office of linebacker Jonathan Vilma?s counsel, Peter Ginsberg) that three persons corroborated the claim that Vilma offered $10,000 to any member of the Saints defense who knocked Vikings quarterback Brett Favre out of the 2009 NFC title game.

?Mr. [Gregg] Williams and Mr. [Mike] Ornstein and another member of the Saints defensive coaching staff, all of whom were present at the meeting, all stated to NFL investigators that Mr. Vilma pledged $10,000 to any player who knocked Brett Favre out of the next week?s NFC championship game against the Minnesota Vikings,? White said according to the official transcript, a copy of which PFT has obtained.? ?All three witnesses stated that the amount of this bounty was $10,000.?

Vilma?s offer allegedly sparked a tidal wave of similar gestures.

?According to one of the witnesses present at the meeting, the bounty offered by Mr. Vilma prior to the NFC championship game inspired additional players to pledge money for injury-producing hits or potentially injury-producing hits against opposing players or for other types of plays during the game,? White said.? ?Mr. Vitt told NFL investigators that this meeting, quote, got out of hand, unquote. NFL investigators were informed that a member of the defensive coaching staff kept track of the various pledges made by players at this meeting.?

White also said that an unnamed witness provided the following quote regarding Vilma?s behavior before the prior week?s game:? ??In the NFC divisional playoffs, the Saints faced the Arizona Cardinals. During a meeting of the defense the night before the game in January 2010, Jonathan Vilma, a Saints defensive captain, asked for permission to address the team, which was granted,. Mr. Vilma, in the course of giving a motivational speech to the team, stated, while raising his hands, each of which held stacks of bills, that he had two five stacks, which I understood to mean $10,000, for anyone who knocked Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner out of the game.??? White said that the quote was independently confirmed by Mike Ornstein.

The problem continues to be that the NFL chose not to make Williams or Ornstein or the unnamed witness available to testify on Monday, and none of the three persons ever have addressed those claims, in any setting.? And so we?re all left to take the NFL?s word for it.

The NFL?s word may be the truth.? But when the three persons are all still, you know, alive, it would be nice to hear it from their mouths before completely believing it.

And that perhaps is and will continue to be the biggest question, which may never be answered.? What will an assistant coach who may have been (and likely still is) motivated by saving his career, a twice-convicted felon who still hopes to have access to NFL events (and inexplicably still does), and an unnamed person who may be a disgruntled former Saints employee say, if ever asked about these matters, especially if asked about them under oath?

Infinitec updates Pocket TV to 1GB RAM, settles on final design and reaffirms October shipments

Infinitec updates Pocket TV to 1GB RAM, settles on final design and reaffirms October shipments

It's another wondrous success story from within the walls of Kickstarter, but honestly, meeting its funding goal was just the start for Infinitec. The outfit's second product, the Pocket TV, is well on its way to becoming a commercialized reality, but backers will be pleased to know that a few changes are being made in order to address some of the most frequently voiced concerns. For starters, the company's doubling the included RAM from 512MB to 1GB. We asked its founders why it'd make such a change, and were told that the boost in memory would enable "snappier performance" throughout, and ensure that it'll handle "the next versions of Android" when updates become available. Wise move. Contrary to the belief of many, such a decision requires more than a simple tweak on a purchase order; Infinitec will be redesigning the final product to look like the item pictured above, and it's bringing on staff in order to adhere to its original shipment month of October. Hungry for even more? There's a minty fresh hands-on video just after the break.

Military guards Egypt power as Islamists claim victory

Daniel Berehulak / Getty Images

Egyptian election workers count votes at a polling station on June 17, in Cairo.

By msnbc.com news services and staff

Updated at 11:09 p.m. ET: As Egyptians waited for the results of the presidential election, the ruling military council issued new rules that made clear the real power remains with the army.

The Muslim Brotherhood's party on Monday declared its candidate, Mohammed Morsi, had won the country's first free presidential election, defeating Ahmed Shafik, ousted president Hosni Mubarak's last prime minister.

But at Shafik's campaign headquarters, Ahmed Sarhan said: "I do not accept this, I will not file wrong numbers." However, another campaigner said: "I don't think we will make it." One woman campaigner at Shafik's headquarters was in tears.

Hours earlier, the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) issued a decree granting itself broad power over the future government, diminishing the authority of the president and seizing control of the process of writing a permanent constitution, The New York Times reported.

The move is the latest in a series of steps that the military has taken recently to hold on to power they had promised to hand over to elected civilians, the Times reported.

The military council's "constitutional declaration" -- issued under powers it took for itself after pushing aside Mubarak to appease street protests 16 months ago -- was a blow to democracy, said many who aired their grievances on social media, a favored weapon in the Arab Spring that ended Mubarak's 30-year rule.

'Outright military coup'
"Grave setback for democracy and revolution," tweeted former U.N. diplomat and Nobel peace laureate Mohamed ElBaradei.

"SCAF retains legislative power, strips president of any authority over army and solidifies its control," he added.

"The 'unconstitutional declaration' continues an outright military coup," tweeted Abdel Moneim Abol Fotouh, a moderate Islamist knocked out in the first round of the presidential election last month. "We have a duty to confront it."

A Facebook page whose young activists helped launch the uprising mocked the army's order, noting Egypt would have a head of state with no control over his own armed forces: "It means the president is elected but has no power," one comment read.

Turnout, which was only 46 percent in the first round of the presidential vote, appeared to electoral officials to have been no higher for the decisive head-to-head contest.

Many of the 50 million eligible voters were dismayed by an unpalatable choice between a man seen as an heir to Mubarak and the nominee of a religious party committed to reversing liberal social traditions. Some cast a ballot against both men in protest.

In a victory speech at his campaign headquarters, Morsi clearly sought to assuage the fears of the large sector of Egyptians that the Brotherhood will try to impose stricter provisions of Islamic law.

"Thank God, who guided the people of Egypt to this right path, the path of freedom and democracy," the bearded, 60-year-old U.S.-educated engineer declared. He promised to "to Egypt in all its factions, Muslims and Christians" to "be a president for all Egyptians ... a servant to them" and seek a "civil, democratic, constitutional and modern state."

He mentioned churches and Christians several times and hardly mentioned Islam or Muslims.

The order from Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, the chairman to the Supreme Council, indicated that the army, which also controls swathes of Egypt's economy, has no intention of handing substantial power now to its old adversary, the Brotherhood.

"SCAF will carry legislative responsibilities ... until a new parliament is elected," the council's order said.

It raised a question of how, even if a civilian head of state is sworn in this week, Tantawi can claim to have met his own deadline of July 1 for relinquishing control -- a deadline the armed forces' major patron and paymaster the United States had stressed in recent days it was expecting him to respect.

Washington and Egypt's European allies, also major providers of aid to the most populous Arab state, had voiced concern when Tantawi, backed by a judicial ruling from a court appointed under Mubarak, dissolved the parliament elected in January in which the Brotherhood and hardline Islamists had a big majority.

'Dangerous days'
The Brotherhood has rejected the army's power to dissolve parliament and warned of "dangerous days."

But though some have compared events to those in Algeria 20 years ago, which ended in civil war between the military and Islamists, many doubt that the Brotherhood has an appetite for violence at present.

Many opponents of military rule have also complained that the Brotherhood has overreached itself in seeking both legislative and presidential power.

Egyptians massed in their millions against Mubarak in January last year in the hope that his removal would end poverty, corruption and police brutality. Many now seem tired of the social turmoil and political bickering that ensued.

Egypt's armed forces have built up massive wealth and commercial interests, helped since the 1970s by a close U.S. alliance which followed the decision of the most populous Arab state to make peace with Israel.

Many Egyptians say the army is just one wing of an entrenched security establishment that has resisted reform and oversight since Mubarak left and would wield influence long after the promised handover to an elected civilian.

"There is no doubt that the state in all its institutions -- judicial, military, interior, foreign and financial -- back Shafiq for president and are working to that end," said Hassan Nafaa, a politics professor who campaigned against Mubarak.

"It is very difficult to eradicate this spirit of Mubarak."

Rooney downplays impact of his return

By ROB HARRIS

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:56 a.m. ET June 17, 2012

KRAKOW, Poland (AP) -Built up as the player to strengthen England's attacking threat, Wayne Rooney is trying to downplay the impact he can make at the European Championship.

The striker has been a frustrated fan for England's first two matches, sitting out the draw against France and victory over Sweden because of suspension.

Now he's preparing to walk straight back into the starting lineup for the Group D finale against Ukraine on Tuesday, with coach Roy Hodgson playing up how he can make "life a little bit easier" for the team.

A draw against the co-hosts would be enough to steer England into the quarterfinals and Rooney would prefer if the attention wasn't on him.

"I don't put that pressure on myself," Rooney said Sunday. "There are 23 players in the squad and there's pressure on us all ... I'm not going to win the Euros on my own. There are 23 players who are going to contribute to try to help us win the tournament or go as far as we can."

Rooney, who scored 35 goals for Manchester United last season, will be making sure he isn't forced to sit in the stands again.

"When you're watching the game, it's more difficult than playing," he said. "When you're playing, you can always do something to try to change the game, or you always feel that you can help the team win. Obviously, sitting in the stands, then there's nothing you can do. You can only talk, so I think it's a bit more difficult watching."

Rooney was banned by UEFA for kicking a Montenegro player in the final Euro 2012 qualifier in October, but now insists his aggression is under control, having received just one yellow card since then playing for United.

"What happened was a mistake, I understood that and apologized to the guy (Miodrag Dzudovic)," Rooney said. "That's fine. I've paid the price. I've had to take it. And I have no problems with my attitude or my temperament."

But his absence gave strikers Danny Welbeck and Andy Carroll a platform to shine against Sweden on Friday, with both scoring in the 3-2 victory. Theo Walcott also scored.

While Hodgson has said Welbeck or Carroll will lose their place against Ukraine, Rooney knows he can't take his own spot in the team for granted.

"The forwards have done well in the games, it's great for me as well," he said. "It's great competition. You know you need to be at your best to get in the team ... there's four good strikers there (including Jermain Defoe) and we'll all fight for one or two places. You have to make sure when you do play that you do well."

But Rooney has failed to fulfill his potential at major championships since bursting onto the international scene with four goals at Euro 2004 as an 18-year-old, failing to score at the 2006 and 2010 World Cups.

But with the affable Hodgson replacing the disciplinarian Fabio Capello as coach, Rooney is finding life in the England camp more relaxed.

"I think it helps everyone being English," he said. "There are no words lost in translation and we understand what the manager wants from us."

Rooney said Hodgson trusts his players and has given them a lot of rest time.

"We understand what we have to do," Rooney said. "It's good for the players to relax and obviously put football aside for even just one afternoon. It's good to give your mind a rest as well."

Wildfire destroys most homes in Colo. history

DENVER (AP) ? Additional crews were joining the fight Saturday against a wildfire in northern Colorado that has scorched about 85 square miles and destroyed at least 181 homes, the most in state history.

The High Park Fire burning 15 miles west of Fort Collins surpasses the Fourmile Canyon wildfire, which destroyed 169 homes west of Boulder in September 2010.

More than 1,630 personnel are working on the Fort Collins-area fire, officials said in a news release Saturday night. The figure represents an increase of more than 100 firefighters from a day earlier.

The lightning-caused blaze, which is believed to have killed a 62-year-old woman whose body was found in her cabin, was 20 percent contained. The fire's incident commander said full containment could be two to four weeks away.

Fire information officer Brett Haberstick said hot and dry conditions were expected to continue, but crews have made progress in containing a 200-acre spot fire that erupted Thursday afternoon north of the Cache La Poudre River, a critical line of defense against northward growth.

"Two 20-person hotshot crews worked throughout the day to secure lines around the perimeter of this spot fire," the officials said in a release.

Firefighters have extinguished other incursions north of the river, but the most recent one appeared to be more serious.

National Weather Service meteorologist Kyle Fredin said some rain was expected in the fire zone Saturday evening, but it will not be enough to put the fire out.

"We need a rain that will really last all day," he said. "But it's better than dry wind at this point."

But crews were bracing for difficult conditions Sunday with wind gusts expected to hit 50 mph along ridge tops and in Poudre Canyon and temperatures in the 90s.

The fire was reported June 9 and has since raced through large swaths of private and U.S. Forest Service land. It was 45 percent contained late Saturday.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, who oversees the Forest Service, met with fire managers in Fort Collins on Saturday and said "fighting this fire is going to require us to be aggressive, persistent and also patient.

"We're going to continue to work to make our forests more resilient. We're going to continue to ensure that adequate resources are provided for fighting fires and we are going to continue to make sure that we encourage appropriate stewardship of our forests," he said.

Vilsack praised Congress for allowing the government to contract additional aircraft ? particularly heavy tankers ? to fight wildfires across the West. But he called on lawmakers for budget certainty to help plan for future fires.

Vilsack is scheduled to hold a news conference with U.S. Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell in Albuquerque on Sunday.

Meanwhile in New Mexico, questions were being raised about whether bureaucratic red tape prevented firefighters from saving more homes affected by the Little Bear Fire after federal officials released transcripts of the firefighters' response.

Congressman Steve Pearce said Friday in an interview with KOB-TV (http://bit.ly/Mga1yx ) that he believed federal officials could have done more after lightning sparked the fire outside the resort town of Ruidoso on June 4. Days later, high winds sent embers more than a mile from the blaze's end, causing the inferno to grow.

But officials released transcripts of the response on the Lincoln National Forest website that suggested firefighters were attacking the blaze as soon as it was a quarter of an acre.

The fire has destroyed 224 homes. It had burned 59 square miles and was 60 percent contained as of Saturday night.

In Arizona, the Northern Arizona Incident Management Team took command of the 1,500 acre blaze in the Tonto National Forest. Officials said the fire was 15 percent contained and firefighters continued to battle unseasonably dry fuels, high temperatures and low humidity.
