Pakistani officials confirm death of key militant

ISLAMABAD (AP) ? Pakistani intelligence officials confirmed Thursday that a U.S. drone strike last week near the Afghan border killed the son of the founder of the powerful Haqqani militant network, a major blow to one of the most feared groups fighting American troops in Afghanistan.

Badruddin Haqqani, who has been described as the organization's day-to-day operations commander, was killed on Aug. 24 in one of three strikes that hit militant hideouts in the Shawal Valley in Pakistan's North Waziristan tribal area, said two senior intelligence officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

The presence of the mostly Afghan Haqqani network in North Waziristan has been a major source of friction between Pakistan and the U.S. The Obama administration has repeatedly demanded Pakistan prevent the group from using its territory to launch attacks in Afghanistan, but Islamabad has refused ? a stance many analysts believe is driven by the country's strong historical ties to the Haqqani network's founder, Jalaluddin Haqqani.

The Pakistani intelligence officials didn't specify which strike on Aug. 24 killed Badruddin, but said he was leaving a hideout when the U.S. missiles hit. The confirmation of his death came from their sources within the Taliban, which is allied with the Haqqani network, and agents on the ground, they said. But neither the officials nor their sources have actually seen Badruddin's body.

Pakistani intelligence officials previously said they were 90 percent sure Badruddin was killed in a drone strike in a different part of North Waziristan on Aug. 21. It's unclear what caused the discrepancy.

Afghanistan's intelligence agency said several days ago that its operatives had confirmed Badruddin's death. A senior Taliban commander has also confirmed the militant's death.

A Taliban spokesman in Afghanistan, Zabiullah Mujahid, has however rejected reports of Badruddin's death, calling them "propaganda of the enemy."

The U.S. does not often comment publicly on the covert CIA drone program in Pakistan and has not said whether Badruddin was killed.

The areas where the American drone strikes generally occur are extremely remote and dangerous, making it difficult to verify a particular person's death.

Badruddin is considered a vital part of the Haqqani structure.

The U.S. State Department has designated Badruddin, along with his father and brothers ? Nasiruddin and Sirajuddin ? as terrorists. The State Department said in May 2011 that Badruddin sits on the Miram Shah Shura, a group that controls all Haqqani network activities and coordinates attacks in southeastern Afghanistan.

Badruddin is also believed to have been responsible for the 2008 kidnapping of New York Times reporter David Rohde, the department said.

After their father effectively retired in 2005, Badruddin and his brother Sirajuddin expanded the network into kidnapping and extortion, both highly profitable for the organization, according to a recent report by the West Point, N.Y.-based Combating Terrorism Center. Afghan intelligence authorities have released intercepts of Badruddin orchestrating an attack against the Intercontinental Hotel in Kabul in 2011, the CTC said.

The U.S. has long viewed the Haqqani network as one of the biggest threats to U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan as well as the country's long term stability.

The Pakistani military has refused to target the Haqqani network, saying its troops are stretched too thin fighting militants at war with the state in other parts of the tribal region. But many analysts believe the military views the group as an important potential ally in Afghanistan after foreign forces withdraw.

Also on Thursday, Pakistan security officials arrested the founder of one of the country's most virulently anti-Shiite militant groups, Laskhar-e-Jangvi, for allegedly making a speech that spread sectarian hatred.

A police official in Lahore, Maroof Afzal, said police arrested Malik Ishaq as he returned from a religious pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia. He was arrested because of a speech he made during Ramadan that authorities said incited sectarian hatred.

Laskhar-e-Jangvi allies itself with al-Qaida and the Taliban. The group is blamed for scores of attacks on Shiites, regarded as infidels, and on Pakistani and U.S. interests. Police arrested Ishaq in 1997, and he was accused in more than 200 criminal cases including the killing of 70 Shiites. But the prosecution could never prove the case, in part because of witness and judge intimidation, and he went free in 2011.

The arrest comes as the country is undergoing a surge of sectarian attacks, many by Sunni Muslims who view Shiites as infidels. Much of the violence has come in Pakistan's southwestern Baluchistan province.

Gunmen shot to death a Shiite Muslim judge along with his bodyguard and driver Thursday in Quetta, the capital of Baluchistan, said senior police official Wazir Khan Nasir. The police suspect it was a sectarian killing, he said.

Also Thursday, fighting continued for a seventh day between security forces and Taliban militants who came from Afghanistan to attack an area in northwest Pakistan, officials said. The fighting in the Bajur tribal area killed eight militants, two anti-Taliban militiamen, a soldier and a female civilian, said a local political official, Nazimeen Khan.

A total of 73 militants, 14 militiamen, 10 soldiers and 11 civilians, including six women and four kids, have been killed in the week of fighting in the Salarzai area of Bajur, said Khan.

Apps for Planning the Perfect Wedding ? Weekly Smartphone App Roundup

2012-08-29---Wedding Apps - OP.jpgAre wedding preparations making your head spin? My fianc?e and I were facing the same issue. We were stuck under a mountain of reference books, bridal magazines and old clip outs she accumulated over the years wondering 'where do we start?' I decided to go digital, and after a bit of shopping we found a few apps to help us weave the pieces together. Here are a few that led us to water and are currently keeping us on track.

iOS2012-08-29---Wedding Apps - iOS.jpg

Left: iWedding Deluxe - Right: Wedding 911 by The Knot

iWedding Deluxe
We wanted an app that could do it all, and we found iWedding Deluxe. The individual check-lists, budget manager, guest list with table settings, and built-in directory absorbed all our information. Soon everything just clicked into place like a jigsaw puzzle. It even has a passcode protection for the bride's dress, for safekeeping. Currently on sale for $6

Wedding 911 by The Knot
Do you have every detail accounted for? Are you sure? Maybe you should double check with The Knot's Wedding 911 app. Wedding 911 delivers a long slew of answers to questions about scheduling, itineraries, etiquette, proper attire and more. It even has a section to ask your own questions in the forum if you ever need assistance. As they say, knowing is half the battle. Free

Android2012-08-29---Wedding Apps - Android.jpg

Left: Wedding Planning - Right: Wedding Registry

Wedding Planning
A similar app to iWedding Deluxe that's big on features and accessibility is Wedding Planning. I personally love the drop-down checklist interface, the blue accents and especially the price. Alongside the substantial to-do list features, there is a budget itinerary to cross off, which is divided up into separate custom categories such as attire, event, deposit, venue and more. As an added bonus you can even arrange your guest list as well. Free

Wedding Registry
An important aspect for any wedding is an organized gift registry. However, limiting yourself to just one store creates invisible boundaries, and using several registries at numerous stores is a hassle. Wedding Registry allows you to create your own registry which you can load with whatever items you want, even from retailers online. Scan any barcode you see anywhere, anyplace with your handset, and it adds to your online registry. Happy scanning! $1
iOS equivalent: Wedding Scan - $3

Windows Phone 72012-08-29---Wedding Apps - WP7.jpg

Left: Table Planner - Right: Wedding Budget

Table Planner
Creating a seating plan for the reception is a precise science. Table Planner helps with everything concerning your guest list, including who RSVPed, who will be attending just the ceremony, who will be invited for the whole day, and what they will be eating. Table planning is easy; just input the amount of tables based on your requirements and how many each sits. Afterwards you can play around with who sits where with a swipe of your finger. $2

Wedding Budget
Arrange the ideal financial path for your nuptials with Wedding Budget. Organize when deposits need to be paid and keep tabs on where money has already been paid to help pave the way. You can input variables into separate section (dress, caterer, venue, etc.) and make a checklist for each. There's nothing quite like the satisfying feeling of crossing them off one by one as the day draws closer. Free

Malaria: Protein impedes microcirculation of malaria-infected red blood cells

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? When the parasite responsible for malaria infects human red blood cells, it launches a 48-hour remodeling of the host cells. During the first 24 hours of this cycle, a protein called RESA undertakes the first step of renovation: enhancing the stiffness of the cell membranes.

That increased rigidity impairs red blood cells' ability to travel through the blood vessels, especially at fever temperatures, according to a new study from researchers at MIT, the Institut Pasteur and the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST).

This marks the first time that scientists have identified the specific role of the RESA protein in modulating blood circulation in an environment that mimics physiological conditions, and could help researchers determine new strategies to combat malaria, which infects an estimated 300 to 500 million people worldwide each year.

The study -- coordinated by MIT's Ming Dao, a principal research scientist in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (DMSE); Monica Diez Silva, a research scientist in DMSE; and YongKeun Park, an assistant professor of physics at KAIST -- appears Aug. 30 in Scientific Reports, an online journal of Nature.

Other MIT authors are Subra Suresh, former dean of the MIT School of Engineering and Vannevar Bush Professor of Engineering who is currently on leave from MIT serving as the director of the National Science Foundation; Jongyoon Han, an associate professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS); Sha Huang, an EECS graduate student; recent PhD recipient Hansen Bow; and the late Michael Feld, professor of physics.

This paper is the culmination of a collaboration between MIT and Institut Pasteur begun in 2004 when Suresh spent a sabbatical in Paris. The new results on dynamic microcirculation significantly extend earlier static experiments by the Suresh lab and the Pasteur team published in 2007, in which they found that RESA makes the red blood cell membrane stiffer than that of a healthy red blood cell by binding to the cell's internal scaffolding, called the cytoskeleton.

"The new work combines the latest advances in genetics, microfabrication, nanomechanics and computational modeling by bringing together interdisciplinary and international teams," says Suresh, the senior author of the paper.

Parasite invasion

When a mosquito carrying the malaria parasite, Plasmodium falciparum, bites a human, the parasite invades the liver, where it divides to produce tens of thousands of merozoites -- the form that can infect red blood cells. After several days or weeks, these merozoites are released into the bloodstream.

In the next stage of infection, the merozoites take up residence inside the red blood cells for about 48 hours, producing more copies of themselves. The RESA protein is expressed only during the first 24 hours, which is known as the "ring stage" due to the circular shape of the merozoites. During this stage, RESA "almost singlehandedly" alters the mechanical properties of red blood cell membranes, Dao says.

For the new study, the researchers created a microfluidic system at MIT that allowed them to study how RESA influences malaria-infected cells as they circulate. As cells flow through the microfluidic channels, they encounter narrow openings that are about the same width as the smallest capillaries (about three micrometers, or about 4 percent of the thickness of the human hair). The team found that malaria-infected cells passed through these channels much more slowly than healthy cells, due to the increased rigidity of the cells caused by the RESA protein.

The researchers also studied infected blood cells as they flowed through a microbead filtration system created at the Institut Pasteur. This system, which consists of densely packed tiny spheres, mimics the structure of the human spleen, which filters blood and removes old blood cells.

While RESA made the infected cells more rigid, they were still able to make it through the microbead system, suggesting that they would also slip through the spleen undetected. "In the ring stage the majority of the infected cells still go past, producing new parasites," Diez Silva says.

The researchers also found that RESA's effects on membrane stiffness and deformability are enhanced at fever temperatures: At these higher temperatures, RESA stabilizes the cell membrane so that it won't disintegrate. This is advantageous to the parasite because it helps the cell remain intact until the end of the 48-hour cycle, allowing it to produce many more copies of itself.

Mohandas Narla, vice president for research at the New York Blood Center, says the study is impressive and one of very few to look at the effects of temperature on malaria infection.

"Malaria is a very widespread global disease, so there is a lot of research being done on it, but most of the people who study it focus on biophysical measurements without paying attention to the fever part of the story," says Narla, who was not part of the research team.

Stopping the cycle

During the second 24 hours of the red blood cell infection, when RESA is no longer expressed, the parasite starts producing other proteins that make the cells even more rigid. They also churn out proteins that cause the cells to clump together and stick to the walls of blood vessels. At the end of the 48-hour cycle, the infected red blood cells burst and release new copies of the parasite, which target new cells and start the cycle over again.

Because they are so sticky, infected blood cells can't reach the spleen during this stage, so there is no chance for them to be filtered out. The new findings suggest that it might be beneficial to seek drugs that boost RESA expression during the first half of the cycle, when cells are still able to get into the spleen, the researchers say. Then, because the cells would be more rigid than typical infected blood cells, the spleen might be able to capture more of them.

The researchers are now further exploring how the spleen interacts with malaria-infected cells. The new microfluidic system used to mimic microcirculation in the small blood vessels is also being further studied as a novel diagnostic tool for detecting malaria and other diseases.

The research was funded by the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology Center, the National Institutes of Health, the KAIST Institute for Optical Science and Technology, and the French Agence Nationale de la Recherche.

Treasury Offset Program (TOP): Debt Management: Programs and Systems: Financial Management Service

TOP logo The Treasury Offset Program is a centralized offset program, administered by the Financial Management Service's (FMS) Debt Management Services (DMS), to collect delinquent debts owed to federal agencies and states (including past-due child support), in accordance with 26 U.S.C. ? 6402(d) (collection of debts owed to federal agencies), 31 U.S.C. ? 3720A (reduction of tax refund by amount of the debts), and other applicable laws. FMS disburses federal payments, such as federal tax refunds, for agencies making federal payments (known as "payment agencies"), such as the Internal Revenue Service. "Creditor agencies," such as the Department of Education, submit delinquent debts to FMS for collection and inclusion in TOP and certify that such debts qualify for collection by offset.

Payment agencies prepare and certify payment vouchers to FMS and disbursing officials at other federal agencies that are non-Treasury disbursed (such as the Department of Defense), who then disburse payments. The payment vouchers contain information about the payment including the name and Tax Identification Number (TIN) of the recipient. Before an eligible federal payment is disbursed to a payee, disbursing officials compare the payment information with debtor information, which has been supplied by the creditor agency, in FMS' delinquent debtor database. If the payee's name and TIN match the name and TIN of a debtor, the disbursing official offsets the payment, in whole or in part, to satisfy the debt, to the extent legally allowed. The disbursing official is required to perform such offset pursuant to 31 U.S.C. ? 3716(c).

FMS transmits amounts collected through offset to the appropriate creditor agencies. FMS maintains information about the delinquent debt in the TOP delinquent debtor database and continues to offset eligible federal payments until the creditor agency suspends or terminates debt collection or offset activity for the debt. A creditor agency will suspend collection if the debt is subject to a bankruptcy stay or if other reasons justify suspension. A creditor agency will terminate collection of a debt if it is paid in full, compromised, discharged, or if other reasons justify termination.

If you have questions regarding the offset of your federal tax refund or offset of another U.S. government-issued payment. You can call our Treasury Offset Program (TOP) Call Center to obtain agency contact information during our customer service hours.

Taxpayer Identifying Number (TIN) Requirements

  • TIN Policy
Includes links to the TIN Policy Directive, Preamble discussion, and other supporting information, such as a Fact Sheet.
  • TIN Policy Directive (11/09/00)
Requires federal payment certifying officials to include a valid TIN on all payment vouchers certified to Treasury for payment, except in certain limited circumstances.

PDF file Text file 31 CFR Part 212 - Taxpayer Identifying Number Requirement
SUMMARY: The Debt Collection Improvement Act of 1996 (DCIA) requires executive agencies to include payee taxpayer identifying numbers (TINs) on certified payment vouchers which are submitted to disbursing officials. The Financial Management Service (FMS), the Department of the Treasury disbursing agency, and other executive branch disbursing agencies are responsible for examining certified payment vouchers to determine whether such vouchers are in proper form. To ensure that executive branch agencies submit payment certifying vouchers in a form which includes payee TINs, FMS issued a proposed rule on September 2, 1997. The rule, as proposed, would require disbursing officials to reject payment requests without TINs.

Upon review of the comments received in response to the proposed rule, FMS has determined that a better approach to ensure compliance with the DCIA TIN requirement, in lieu of issuing a final rule, is to require each executive agency to submit a TIN Implementation Report to FMS documenting how the agency is complying with this requirement. Accordingly, FMS is issuing this document withdrawing the September 2, 1997, notice of proposed rulemaking (SEE BELOW). The Policy Statement outlining TIN Implementation Report requirements is being published in the Federal Register concurrently with this document. To view the Policy Statement, click here.

31 CFR Part 212 Taxpayer Identifying Number Requirement (Proposed Rule)
The Debt Collection Improvement Act of 1996 (DCIA) requires that executive agencies include the taxpayer identifying number (TIN) of each person to whom payment may be made with each payment request submitted to a disbursing official on a certified voucher. This requirement will ensure that TINs of federal payment recipients are available to facilitate debt collection by offset of federal payments under the DCIA, and for vendor income reporting to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) as mandated by the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 (IRC).

Correction: Security Guard Shooting story

WASHINGTON (AP) ? In a story Aug. 16 about a shooting at the Family Research Council, The Associated Press, relying on information from George Mason University, reported erroneously that suspect Floyd L. Corkins II received a master's degree in 2006 from George Mason's College of Education and Human Development in Fairfax. His father, who is also named Floyd Corkins, earned that degree. The younger Corkins attended George Mason between 2005 and 2007 as part of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences but did not graduate.

A corrected version of the story is below:

Conservative, gay rights groups spar over shooting

Conservative, gay rights groups spar after shooting at Family Research Council headquarters

By ERIC TUCKER and BEN NUCKOLS

Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) ? As authorities revealed details about the Family Research Council shooting, the head of the influential conservative organization blamed the attack on "reckless rhetoric," but then delivered his own politically-charged remark, saying critics gave the accused gunman "a license to shoot an unarmed man."

Tony Perkins' comments Thursday fanned already-inflamed statements from both sides, tapped into deep divisions over abortion and gay marriage, and drew more finger-pointing.

Meanwhile, the accused shooter, Floyd Lee Corkins II, was ordered held without bond on accusations he opened fire a day earlier inside the lobby of the council's headquarters. Corkins, whose parents said he strongly supported gay rights, had a backpack full of Chick-fil-A sandwiches and a box of ammunition when he said words to the effect of "I don't like your politics" and shot a security guard, authorities said.

The guard was shot in the left arm but nonetheless managed to help take down the gunman, preventing what the police said could have been a deadly attack.

It wasn't immediately clear why Corkins, 28, had the chicken sandwiches.

The Family Research Council has steadfastly supported the president of Chick-Fil-A and his staunch opposition to same-sex marriage, a stance that has placed the fast-food chain at the center of a hot-button national cultural debate.

The organization strongly opposes gay marriage and abortion and says it advocates "faith, family and freedom in public policy and public opinion." The conservative group maintains a powerful lobbying presence, testifying before Congress and reviewing legislation.

While blaming Corkins for the shooting, Perkins also faulted the Southern Poverty Law Center, an Alabama-based civil rights organization that tracks and litigates against hate groups. The law center labeled the council a hate group in 2010 for what it called the organization's anti-gay stance.

"Corkins was given a license to shoot an unarmed man by organizations like the Southern Poverty Law Center that have been reckless in labeling organization hate groups because they disagree with them on public policy," Perkins said.

Mark Potok, a senior fellow at the SPLC, called Perkins' accusation "outrageous." He said the council earned the designation for spreading false propaganda about the gay community, not for its opposition to same-sex marriage.

"The FRC routinely pushes out demonizing claims that gay people are child molesters and worse ? claims that are provably false," he said in a statement. "It should stop the demonization and affirm the dignity of all people."

Corkins had recently been volunteering at a D.C. community center for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. He lived with his parents in Herndon, Va., and appearing in court Thursday with what looked to be a black or swollen eye, told a federal magistrate that he had only $300.

Prosecutors requested a mental health evaluation, and Corkins' public defender did not address the allegations in court.

Corkins faces charges of assault with intent to kill and bringing firearms across state. The judge ordered him held pending a hearing next week. Corkins was otherwise silent during the hearing and stared ahead impassively.

His parents have also not commented, but they told FBI agents that their son "has strong opinions with respect to those he believes do not treat homosexuals in a fair manner."

The assault charge carries up to 30 years in prison and the weapons charge has a 10-year maximum sentence.

Corkins attended George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., between 2005 and 2007 as part of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences but did not graduate. He earlier attended Grace Brethren Christian School near Andrews Air Force Base outside Washington.

The shooting was condemned by President Barack Obama and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, as well as gay and lesbian advocacy groups and conservative organizations.

But there was no swift sign of reconciliation across the ideological spectrum.

"Perkins cannot be allowed to exploit the sympathy rightfully generated by this inexcusable crime to whitewash his group's ongoing anti-gay activities. If the FRC wants to stop being labeled a hate group, it must stop doing and saying hateful things," Wayne Besen, the founding executive director of Truth Wins Out, a non-profit group that fights anti-gay sentiment, said in a statement.

Authorities believe Corkins parked his car at a northern Virginia Metro station and used public transportation to get downtown. An open black box resembling a gun box was found on the car's passenger seat, an affidavit said. Corkins used a Sig Sauer 9mm pistol that was legally bought and owned, said Richard Marianos, special agent in charge of the ATF's Washington field office.

The guard, Leonardo "Leo" Johnson, 46, was resting comfortably at a hospital Thursday morning. He told WJLA-TV that Corkins claimed he had come to the council's office to interview for an internship.

Johnson's mother, Virginia Johnson, said she had not been to visit him but had spoken to him by phone.

"He said he feels very well," she said in a brief interview. "I am proud of him, very proud of him."

Japan considers deporting China activists to defuse feud: media

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan may deport 14 Chinese activists arrested for landing on a disputed island in order to defuse a worsening feud between Asia's two biggest economies, media and experts said on Thursday, but the risk of an escalating confrontation remains.

The row over the islands in the East China Sea, which are near potentially vast maritime gas fields, has frayed relations between the two Asian neighbors, long bedeviled by the bitter legacy of Japan's wartime occupation of much of China and contemporary rivalry over resources and regional clout.

The landing came on a day of regional diplomatic jousting coinciding with the 67th anniversary of the end of World War Two, highlighting how history dogs Tokyo's ties with both China and its one-time colony, South Korea.

Japanese media said the activists, seven of whom waded ashore and planted a Chinese flag on the rocky, uninhabited isle on Wednesday, would be deported if authorities determined they had done nothing else illegal.

Japan and China traded protests over the incident, with Tokyo lodging a complaint with the Chinese ambassador and Beijing demanding their unconditional and immediate release.

China's ruling Communist Party is preoccupied with a looming leadership change, which will probably both increase its focus on internal stability and deter it from seeming soft on Japan, a country many Chinese still associate with wartime brutality.

"Just what kind of mentality has caused Japan to lose its self-restraint and repeatedly challenge China's staunch determination to protect its territory and sovereignty?" asked the China's People's Daily newspaper in a commentary.

NATIONALIST PRESSURES

Riot police and plain-clothes security guards surrounded Japan's embassy in Beijing on Thursday, with one lone protester holding up a sign being told to move on after about 10 minutes.

Around 30 people protested at the Japanese consulate in Hong Kong, chanting slogans and demanding the activists' release.

"Japan has no right to detain Chinese activists on territory that belongs to China," said lawmaker Yip Kwok-him.

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda, his popularity ratings tanking after about a year in office, also faces domestic pressure not to appear weak on diplomacy.

But with economic interdependence tighter than ever, both sides likely want to avoid a rerun of a nasty spat two years ago after Japan's arrest of a Chinese trawler captain whose boat collided with a Japanese patrol boat near the islands.

China at the time imposed a de facto ban on exports of rare earth metals vital for electronics and auto parts manufacturing.

"There is nothing to be gained by either country by fighting," said Akio Takahara, a University of Tokyo expert in Sino-Japanese relations.

"Their true intention is to try to stabilize the situation as soon as possible. But when issues involving nationalism are involved, there are aspects politicians cannot control. Things will not be resolved automatically and careful responses are needed."

Japan's relations with South Korea have also nosedived since South Korean President Lee Myung-bak made a high-profile visit last week to another uninhabited island claimed by the two countries and then prompted an official protest from Tokyo over comments seen by some as an insult to Japanese Emperor Akihito.

Adding to the anger of Japan's neighbors, two Japanese cabinet ministers paid homage at a controversial Tokyo shrine for war dead on Wednesday to mark the war's end.

Why Do I Need A Real Estate Agent? ? Silicon Valley and Beyond

Post image for 5 Reasons You Need A Realtor?

by The Dawn Thomas Team on August 16, 2012

A lot of people ask themselves, ?Why do I need a Realtor??? Which is why companies like Redfin have sprouted up to ?help you save money.? Unfortunately, for quite a few people, companies like Redfin often make what Realtors?* do seem easy and worry free.?Your Realtor? is your gatekeeper, not to sit back and make a commission as Redfin would like you to believe-its because we?re experts and while we know that you may be able to handle a transaction: this is our career. Of course the Dawn Thomas Team loves to help people sell their homes and to help buyers find a home of their dreams-the chance you give us to step into your lives and help you with a huge transition or purchase is why we do this- but ultimately we want what?s best for our clients and we leave that up to them! Read on to see the 5 Reasons we think you Need A Realtor? or more accurately; an expert in Real Estate.

  1. A real estate transaction is complicated. In most cases, buying or selling a home requires disclosure forms, inspection reports, mortgage documents, insurance policies, deeds, and multi-page government-mandated settlement statements. Having a knowledgeable team through this complexity can help you avoid delays or costly mistakes.
  1. Selling or buying a home is time consuming. Even in a strong market, homes in our area stay on the market for an average of 40 days. And it usually takes another 60 days or so for the transaction to close after an offer is accepted.
  1. Real estate has its own language. If you don?t know a CMA from a PUD, you can understand why it?s important to work with someone who speaks that language.
  1. The Dawn Thomas Team has done it before. Most people buy and sell only a few homes in a lifetime, usually with quite a few years in between each purchase. And even if you?ve done it before, laws and regulations change. That?s why having an expert on your side is critical.
  1. The Dawn Thomas Team provides objectivity. Since a home often symbolizes family, rest, and security, not just four walls and roof, homeselling or buying is often a very emotional undertaking. And for most people, a home is the biggest purchase they?ll ever make. Having a concerned, but objective, third party helps you keep focused on both the business and emotional issues most important to you.

*The difference between someone calling themselves a Realtor? versus a Real Estate Agent can be confusing. Every Realtor? is a Real Estate Agent, the?trademarked?term means that we have decided to affiliate ourselves with the National Association of Realtors? -a trade organization of more than 1 million members nationwide-?and in our case;the California Association of Realtors? and a local board.?REALTORS??subscribe to a stringent code of ethics that helps guarantee the highest level of service and integrity

AZ Dem: Gov. Brewer just 'grandstanding' with new immigration order

By David Ferguson
Thursday, August 16, 2012 10:43 EDT

?

Arizona?s Governor Jan Brewer (R) issued an executive order on Wednesday containing a string of provisions designed to thwart President Barack Obama?s new immigration reforms (.pdf), which were announced in May, including the right of children of undocumented immigrants to receive work permits and pay taxes, as well as to receive protection from deportation. Talking Points Memo reports, however, that Arizona Democratic Senate Leader David Shapira said that Brewer?s new measures are redundant in light of laws already on the books in that state.

?It doesn?t seem to really do anything,? he said, ?I see it as her once again trying to grandstand on the issue of immigration.?

Brewer?s executive order (.pdf) would block all government benefits, including driver?s licenses to the young people who can obtain work permits and protection from deportation under the federal program, known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. Deferred Action would allow the children of immigrants who were brought to this country outside of legal immigration channels to obtain the ability to work and pay taxes legally in the U.S., adding tens of thousands of new taxpayers to the system in Arizona alone, and possibly more than a million nationwide.

According to Schapira, Arizona already has strict laws banning undocumented immigrants from obtaining driver?s licenses or other state-issued ID cards, or from having access to any other taxpayer-funded public benefits. Those laws would already override the Deferred Action program?s stipulations. Even Brewer admitted as much at a press conference, saying that her order doesn?t change anything.

?It actually is no different than what was already in place,? she said.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU)?s state director for Arizona, Alessandra Soler, pointed to this as evidence that Brewer doesn?t actually understand the law.

?This is yet another reason why Arizona has no business trying to regulate immigration matters,? Soler said in a written statement.

Brewer has butted heads with President Obama and the federal government before on immigration matters. She was the governor who signed into law SB 1070, the state law known as the ?Papers, please? law, many statutes of which have been ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court.

Immigration attorneys and activists have said that they will be studying Brewer?s ruling in the coming days to determine what, if any, impediments it will present to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. Thousands of young people all over the country have reportedly lined up to become part of the program, which goes into effect this month.

Lebanese Shiite clan vows to abduct more Syrians

BEIRUT (AP) ? A spokesman for a powerful Shiite Muslim clan has vowed to abduct more Syrian nationals in retaliation for the seizure of a Lebanese Shiite man in Syria this week.

Tensions from the civil war in Syria have spilled over into Lebanon and armed members of the al-Mikdad clan on Wednesday abducted more than 20 nationals and a Turk.

Maher al-Mikdad told local media Thursday that more would be seized unless Syrian rebels release Hassane Salim al-Mikdad who was captured in Syria this week.

Rebels who kidnapped al-Mikdad claimed he was a member of Shiite militant group Hezbollah. Hezbollah and his family deny this.

The wave of hostage-taking in addition to road closures by angry Shiites has prompted Gulf countries to call on all their citizens in Lebanon to leave immediately.

Broadway's 'Once' recoups its investment

NEW YORK (AP) ? The Tony Award-winning musical "Once" has proved to be a song at the box office: It has recouped its $5.5 million investment in less than six months.

Producers announced on Monday that the show has turned profitable after just 21 weeks, or "faster than any Tony Award-winning best musical in more than a decade."

The musical starring Steve Kazee and Cristin Milioti is based on the 2006 film about an unlikely romance between a Czech flower seller and an Irish street musician in Dublin.

Like the film, the musical features songs by Marketa Irglova and Glen Hansard, including "Falling Slowly." It won eight Tonys and last week earned an average ticket price of $124.27.

Made for about $150,000, the original film earned $20 million. A national tour of the musical will launch in the summer of 2013.

The musical was an off-Broadway hit and doesn't suffer a bit from moving to a 1,000-seat Broadway theater.

Traditionally, only about 3 in 10 Broadway shows recoup.

History-making Obame rues inexperience

Anthony Obame made history by winning Gabon's first ever Olympic medal but then bemoaned his lack of experience in failing to secure gold.

Obame led the men's over-80kg taekwondo final by 9-6 with less than 30 seconds left when he was caught with a three-point head kick by Italy's Carlo Molfetta.

The fight finished level and after a scoreless sudden death period of golden point, Molfetta won a judges decision to leave Obame with the silver medal.

And although he made history, Obame felt he should have had the gold.

"I'm relieved because not all competitors got a medal and I really wanted to come back (to Gabon) with a medal but not any medal, a gold medal," he said.

"But I couldn't manage that against a very experienced Italian.

"He had me on a youthful error but I hope to come back stronger next time."

Obame was most frustrated at failing to hold onto his lead late in the third and final round.

"It was at this very moment that he seized his opportunities because I was already imagining myself as a gold medallist.

"I think I was dreaming because I was leading and I got caught. It's true I didn't lose on points but on a judges decision. That cost me dearly.

"If I'd have kept the scoring and tempo from the beginning it would have been me the Olympic champion."

Even so, the 23-year-old said he was eager to go home and see what reception he gets.

"I realise what I've done, I admit it. But to be honest it hasn't sunk in yet because I'm not in my country and I'm surrounded by athletes and people congratulating me.

"It's often like that but maybe not with the same energy. It's often been like that but we'll see when I get back."
